An Oregon town's City Council voted down a proposal to say the Pledge of Allegiance before every council meeting, but later passed a compromise that seemed to make no one happy.

The approved measure allows the pledge to be recited at just four Eugene City Council meetings a year, those closest to the Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Flag Day.

It was supposed to be simple, but Councilman Mike Clark soon found out when you’re dealing with God and country, nothing in Eugene is easy.

I used to live in the Emerald People’s Republic, right there on 18th and Kincaid, across from the university. Exposure to the leftwing aroma of the community turned me into a conservative. Oh, yes, and a fan of Nancy’s Yogurt. And Birkenstocks. Nothing in the story surprises me, except for the fact that the city council actually said the pledge of allegience for all those years preceeding this controversy.

But I guess the origins were not nefarious, just the adaptation by fascists.

It's an offshoot of a salute from olden days. You'd hold your right hand (sword arm) open and facing up and towards the person you were greeting to show that you didn't have bad intentions. Over the years the military salute has migrated to the hand over the brow. You can still see where the changes happened by looking at salutes (and how open the hand is in relation to the soldier) of European soldiers.
