Last Dodger Series win and appearance — 1988. What has happened to one of the great sports franchises?

Thanks, pal. I’ll be okay. My Fathers Day present was a good supply of ammunition.

Fox News sold the Dodgers to Frank McCourt at their peak price. With the demographic decline of LA and California the Dodger franchise just isn’t worth what it used to be. The disintegration of McCourt’s marriage is also a refection of California same as the cholo gangbangers infesting Dodger Stadium

I saw Koufax pitch his first no-hitter. Saw back to back homeruns in the 1981 Series by Cey and Yeager to beat Guidry and the Yankees 2-1. Saw Wills steal probably 20 of his 104 during his record year. Celebrated being 21 by having a beer an inning in the bleachers for the first 7 innings and wondering why I couldn’t follow Koufax curve balls. Saw Willie Davis hit in number 29, 30, and 31 in a row. Saw many, many games pitches by Koufax, Drysdale, Hirscheiser, etc. Saw the Duke his a homerun and triple on Duke Snider night in the Coliseum. Have a photo of Garvey holding my son at his first game when he was 2 1/2. “Garbey” he was called. Saw the hated McCovey get a sac fly on his last at bat in the majors and Dodger fans gave him a 15-min standing O.

I loathe the lowlife McCourts and what they have done. Also loathe that Los Angeles has become a 3rd world hellhole city of illegal aliens.

Loved your recollections--especially this:

Saw the hated McCovey get a sac fly on his last at bat in the majors and Dodger fans gave him a 15-min standing O.

That's baseball at its best. I am afraid those days are gone. De-evolution is in full swing.

‘66 STILL pisses me off!! No way in hell were those worthless orioles, (no cap intentional btw), better than the Dodgers that year. Seven game set max......maybe. 162?....NEVER!!! Funny tho Doug but I just this past weekend was going thru my extensive collection of ‘SPORT MAGAZINES’, (mine are circa 46/47 thru 70/71 or so, about 200 or so issues), looking for an article on Wills and Davis on how the value of speed was back. Some of their 1965, or so iirc, comments mirrored old timer’s, (1900’s thru 1919 or so), thoughts when ‘inside baseball ruled. “member the Don D./Sandy ‘66 holdout, (I’m sure ya do!!!), over 100,000 thou and 125,000 thou a year!!!? Hell, a backup SS swingin’ at .223, (lol!! check my screen name!!), gets that a week now!!!! The game was at it’s best imho from ‘46 thru about ‘72 or so. Those who did not get a chance to see Sandy pitch in the years he dominated........well, I feel sorry for ‘em. NOBODY ever threw a ball like he did. Sure there are those that argue his value over time, (and they have a point), but from ‘60/61 or so when he got dialed in, until the end of the ‘66 season and series nobody EVER threw better. Lefty Grove maybe, he to had one hell of a record, especially ERA and strikeout totals....but darn it Sandy was something else plus he had the respect of all of his fellow Dodgers and opponents! One interesting thing I still hear about in the hot stove league chats was Sandy was not that big of a man, how could he throw so hard etc. etc. (Sandy was about 6’2 around 200 lbs.) The reason he looked ‘small’ is because in so many pics of him he was standing posed next to the giant DD!

Darn, I don’t remember the left hander I saw pitch in his very first game. He struck out the first six batters. He didn’t have a big career but that was amazing to see. Also saw the Toy Cannon hit a slammer against the Reds and Little D strike out Bench on a 3-2 slow curve to save a victory against the Reds. Don’t remember who did it but also saw a Dodger steal of home.

Now I remember — it was Pete Reichart who struck out the first six he faced. I’m going to look that up.

HERE IS THE REFERENCE:

In a night game on April 12, 1962, a rookie southpaw, Pete Richert, was summoned from the bullpen by manager Walt Alston of the Los Angeles Dodgers to replace starter Stan Williams in the second inning. In this, his very first major league appearance, Pete struck out seven of the Cincinnati Reds, six of them in succession. That effort tied the record of six consecutive strike outs by a pitcher in his first major league game. Pete struck out the first man he faced to end a four run Cincinnati explosion. He got four in a row in the third when Johnny Roseboro dropped a third strike and then he fanned the first man to bat in the fourth to complete the remarkable feat of striking out the first six batters he faced in his major league debut. The Dodgers rallied for seven in the fifth on five hits, three walks, and four Cincinnati errors to give Richert credit for an 11-7 victory.

My mom went to the first home game in the Coliseum. I saw Koufax strike out 18 Giants—at the time that was a National League record. Got to see Drysdale shut out the Yankees 1-0 in the World Series. Grew up “seeing” the game through Vin Scully’s words over the radio. The Dodgers organization used to be so classy. Dodger Stadium was always such a nice place to watch a game. It is very sad to see the whole organization in decline.

What is happening to the LA Dodgers now is echoing what happened to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The locals who were loyal to the team moved from Brooklyn and were replaced by people who cared little about the team. The decline of the Ebbetts Field area then made undesirable to travel to see the Dodgers play.
