Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview surrounding the official event she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo's own John Wayne.
The only problem, as one eagle-eyed reader notes: Waterloo's John Wayne was not the beloved movie star, but rather John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer.
Mrs. Bachmann grew up in Waterloo, and used the town as the backdrop for her campaign announcement, where she told Fox News: "Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
(Someone has already posted the clip to YouTube under the name BachmannLovesGacy) John Wayne, the movie legend, is in fact from Iowa and the John Wayne birthplace is a celebrated landmark only it's in Winterset, which is a nearly three hour drive away from Waterloo. Gacy, though, had his first taste of the criminal life in Waterloo, where he lived for a short time, and where he had his first criminal conviction for an attempted homosexual assault, which landed him in prison for 18 months. He would move back to Illinois, where his killing spree started, and lasted about six years. In 1980 he was convicted on 33 counts of murder, and was executed in 1994.

Just as nobody remembers the “Midnight Ride of Israel Bissell”.
(Paul Revere only rode 19 miles before capture.Bissell rode from Boston to Philly over 4 days, 6 hours)
Possibly. It was a bad, stupid mistake. Where did it come from?
Did a staffer give this to her? If so, throw that staffer under the train now.
Yes, and I think it could have blown her chance. Now everyone is going to be talking about her huge Gaffe and making fun of her.
Like:
Andy Daglas - “Michele Bachmann compares herself to great patriots of old, like Sam Adams and his celebrated offspring, Son of Sam.”
One of my all-time favs!
Bachmanns main problem and mistake will always be hiring Ed Rollins and until she gets rid of him, it will be like an anvil tied around her neck, he is like a unlucky charm
Viewing the video, looks like her mistake alone.
This and the Lexington & Concord gaffe combined are terrible. Not unrecoverable, but terrible. As another person mentioned this is the fault of some idiot campaign staffer. She needs to add additional layer of proofreaders to fact-check her speeches starting this afternoon.
Some kind words for Michelle’s blunder

“Downes sounded forgiving of Bachmann’s blunder, acknowledging that “every last one of us misspeaks” and recalling: “John Wayne himself would mangle names like crazy longtime friends and co-stars.”
“The more you talk, the more mistakes you make,” Downes said. “If you talk to Michele, tell her where we are and tell her to come see us.”
I really don’t see how getting John Wayne’s hometown wrong is that big a deal, esp if he was born in Iowa. Again, I don’t necessarily believe the gaffe was anyone mistaking JWG’s name for JW.
It really is on par with calling North Korea “our North Korean allies”.
Seems someone else has some fact checking to do.
#49
exactly!!!
libs don’t have standards (=Obama).
we do.
Hopefully this isn’t Bachman’s waterloo.
OMG, what a stupid mistake.
My sister dated the last boy that man killed.
This goes down the memory hole for Democrats.
Slanderer!
It’s a huge gaffe.
She was using John Wayne as a theme. It looked like it would be a central theme. She blew it.

Now, how does one recover from such a disaster?
I think she has to find a clever way to joke about it. Perhaps she should visit the town where he was born.
I can: if the election is her vs. Obama. You saying you would vote for Obama?
Staying home=voting for Obama.
