Bachmann Launches Presidential Campaign
Fox News ^ | 27 June 2011 | Staff

Posted on 06/27/2011 9:05:43 AM PDT by bjorn14

Rep. Michele Bachmann, stressing her Iowa roots and appealing directly to Tea Party voters, came out swinging Monday as she formally launched her campaign for president.

Buoyed by a strong showing in several recent polls, the Minnesota congresswoman cast her campaign as the voice for "constitutional conservatives" looking for a government that lives within its means while giving the private sector the room to grow. She launched a broadside against President Obama for racking up too much debt while stimulating too little job growth and vowed to make him a "one-term president."

"We cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama," she declared, later adding: "We can win in 2012 and we will win."

In her announcement, Bachmann described a special bond with Iowa, the nation's leadoff caucus state. She held the kickoff in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, and called herself a "descendent of generations of Iowans," saying the state is where she learned "everything I needed to know." She also appealed to another vital primary constituency, calling herself part of the Tea Party movement and defending it as a cross-section of Republicans, independents and disaffected Democrats.

I don’t think Barack Obama is “stupid.” I think he’s diabolically clever. He does not trifle to do foolishness in small ways. Now Joe Biden, that would be the epitome of stupid.

Isn’t there something in the Good Book about being as “wise as serpents” while remaining “harmless as doves”?

I don't think he's either....he's a gigantic narciccist which requires only that one look and sound other than what they really are...and he does that pretty well. He says what his followers wants to hear and then basks in his own self-importance. As for anything he says or does which is remotely clever you can bet it's Jarett' agenda, and his handlers, with their hands on the rutter. He's not steering the boat..he's simply the front man...and they will continue to prop him up...but the actual movements and doings of are definately at the hands of his handlers...and others who move him like a puppet on stage.

No, actually, you are wrong. There were two bills. The first to explicitly refuse authorization of our involvement. This passed. The second to reduce funds, but not defund the campaing, while authorizing it. This failed because understood the scheme. The lost included Bachmann, but also Ron Paul, Jimmy Duncan, and Walter Jones.

http://www.amconmag.com/larison/2011/06/25/the-vote-to-defund-the-libyan-war/
And here is Bachmann's explanation of her vote:,BR> http://bachmann.house.gov/news/email/show.aspx?ID=5YBC6NTE5YHTPRGRAEAV3QESOI

Bachmann Statement Regarding Libya Votes

(Washington, DC) Today, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) released the following statement regarding her votes in the House of Representatives on Libya:

"Today I voted against authorizing U.S. action in Libya and against a measure that would merely limit funding, not cut off funding, for our involvement in the North African nation. For any conflict, there must be a clear U.S. interest and the goal of the mission must be laid out.

"President Obama has failed to articulate our goals and strategies or even provide a vital national interest in Libya. This is another example of the Obama Administration ‘leading from behind’ as demonstrated by the President consulting with the French, the UN, NATO, and others, but not once consulting with Congress.

"Our mission is so murky that we are still unsure of the factions we are supporting in Libya through our actions. If a new regime emerges and it support terrorists, the results will be devastating for the national security interests of the United States.

"There was an opportunity today to limit funding to a Libyan operation, but I could not support it because it does not go far enough. Funds must be fully cut off to the President’s involvement in Libya."

Here is the authorization masquerading as defunding. HR 2278

A BILL

To limit the use of funds appropriated to the Department of Defense for United States Armed Forces in support of North Atlantic Treaty Organization Operation Unified Protector with respect to Libya, unless otherwise specifically authorized by law.

SECTION 1. LIMITATION ON USE OF DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FUNDS FOR UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES IN SUPPORT OF NATO OPERATION UNIFIED PROTECTOR WITH RESPECT TO LIBYA.

I did. Maybe you should do some more research and find an opinion that isn’t almost 5 months old.
I said "supported". Now that public opinion opposes such actions, Palin leads by following the polls.

RE :”Bottom line, immigration is a 2-headed monster for a politician. Go strong and lose your seat. Go weak and lose your seat. Be smart and move ahead. It cost the hell out of Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo. It cost John McCain. You can either slit your own throat or you can be smart and pick the right battles.

I take this problem seriously too.
The problem with Republicans is that amnesty is the only political strategy they can think of for hispanics, directed by liberals and MSM. That or ignoring them like Sharon Angle did. Angle could have run ads in hispanic neighborhoods in Spanish how bad unemployment is for them and how Democrats think they are suckers that want them dependent on welfare and want to divide them from other Americans. Maybe Republicans cant get their vote but they can try to repress their vote for Dems. They show an amazing LACK of political imagination.

Here's the FNC video from July 2010 during the Arizona immigration battle. You can see how BoR is forced to lead Palin on the subject of illegals already here as she doesnt appear to want to talk about it in detail. BoR asked her what she would do with the 12 million and she tried to change the subject back to the border(as most Republicans do), so he interrupted and kept on pressing her on it.

O'REILLY: Now we have 12 million people staring at you. And you say to those people you're in here illegally; you broke civil law by coming in here. Now are you going to deport them? What are you going to do?

PALIN: Well, again, first, let me go back to the importance of securing the border. They're talking about amnesty…

O'REILLY: No, but we got that, governor. Everybody…(interrupts her)

PALIN: No, we don't.

O'REILLY: Yes, the people watching this program have it. We have it. We assume that you, as president, would secure the border. I have confidence that you would do that. But now you have to look inward, all right? And you've got 12 million people staring at you. What are you going to have them do?

PALIN: You're not going to give them a free pass. You're not going to say, OK, you and anybody else who wants to scurry across this porous border between now and when we finally do finally get it fenced in and physically secure, we're going to give you a free pass.

O'REILLY: All right.

PALIN: And just because you've broken law in the past…

O'REILLY: So no amnesty.

PALIN: …we can trust you. No, no amnesty.

O'REILLY: But what do you do with these folks?

PALIN: Which means…

O'REILLY: Do you make them register with the federal government? Do you tell them they have 60 days to get out of here before we put you in jail? What do you do with them?

PALIN: Do we make them register with the federal government? Yes, we do.

O'REILLY: Yes, so we know who they are.

PALIN: We have — exactly, yes. I want to answer to that question absolutely.

O'REILLY: All right.

PALIN: We're not going to give them a free pass.

O'REILLY: So you make them register with the federal government.

PALIN: We're not going to reward the bad behavior.

O'REILLY: And if they don't register with the — say you gave them 60 days to register with the federal government. There's a form at the post office they have to send in like a Census form. All right, say they didn't do it.

PALIN: You deport them.

O'REILLY: OK.

PALIN: You have to get them out.

O'REILLY: So the ones that don't…

PALIN: We don't reward their continued bad behavior.

O'REILLY: …after period of time. OK, after a period of time…

PALIN: Yes.

O'REILLY: …the ones that don't cooperate, you catch them, they're gone.

No, actually, you are wrong. There were two bills. The first to explicitly refuse authorization of our involvement. This passed.

You are WRONG yet again.
Two resolutions on the Libya intervention failed in the House of Representatives today.

The second to reduce funds, but not defund the campaing, while authorizing it. This failed because understood the scheme. The lost included Bachmann, but also Ron Paul, Jimmy Duncan, and Walter Jones.

Show me where Bachmann says she voted against the bill because that would authorize the campaign.

Bachmann is on record complaining that NATO has killed tens of thousands of Libyans. A claim that comes from the Kaddafi regime and embarrassingly misstates. But then Bachmann votes against the bill to cut funding for pilotless drones and other airstrikes.

Congress is paying for Libya now. Bachmann has done a huge favor to Obama for not at least cutting his funds to wage war.

This thread is not about "Ron Paul, Jimmy Duncan, and Walter Jones" and what their reasoning was. But if you insist on bringing others into it because you apply their logic to the flake Bachmann then how about this:

Only 27 of the Tea Party members, of which she is the leader in Congress, voted with her, while 32 did not. Meanwhile, 144 Republicans voted to defund the action, including members of the leadership, Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy.

So on the one hand there was a meaningful bill to cut the critical funding, and on the other hand there was voting against that bill which has changed nothing and did Obama a huge favor.

Now that public opinion opposes such actions, Palin leads by following the polls.

It is funny that rmlew drags the opinion of a private citizen into this, while moaning about following the polls. Especially when Rep. Michele Bachmann failed to take a position on air strikes against Libya, until she saw that NATO was not going to have a quick victory from the air.

Bachmann, speaking before the U.N. vote on Thursday, did not specify whether she was against air strikes against pro-Gadhafi military targets or whether she supported a multinational intervention.

LoL!

I hope you realize that “defunding” bill was fake. It defunded some elements of the operation but funded others. It was a stealth authorization bill.

I been posting more than once about the defunding bill, and that it would affect the actual firing of weapons. So I do realize that part.

Stealth authorization bill?

Many Republicans and Conservatives believe the President already has that authority.

I watched her announcement and while I appreciate many of her expressed views (generally shared by other candidates), she isn't connecting with me.

I'm still not feeling as if she believes she can deliver like she says. It's not just her but this topic is about Bachmann.

I'm less concerned about gaffes (John Wayne) than I am with how tightly scripted she is and the bizarre controversy or statements about the father-on-law's old farm. The press isn't helping sort that and she's said things that contradict the disclosure statements she filed as a congresswoman.

At this point, I don't see her as my great hope for a Romney alternative.

I find a few others warmer, more self-assured, more passionate and less rote or like legalistic parsers.

You are correct that many do believe Obama has that authority but the fact remains the War Powers act is the law of the land.

Unless and until it's ruled unconstitutional the Congress should defend itself. After all, 2/3rds super majorities overrode Nixon's veto so at some point the body considered it of extreme importance.

This is even more egregious than Obama refusing to defend DOMA before the courts, a cause the House has taken up to defend *that* legislative act, as the War Powers are constitutional enumerated powers.

People are playing politics and hoping to run out the clock on Libya hoping Gaddafi falls or is assassinated by NATO. Obama would love to turn Libya into a House Republicans vs. the Commander-in-Chief, slayer of Osama Bin Ladin, along side "our brave women and men in the armed forces" for the 2012 campaign.

Just look at what he did with the government shutdown threat a few months ago. He refused to pay the troops if it happened. He's happy to use the military as political pawns in his war with Republicans.

They won't impeach him because there's no point to it. The votes won't be there in the Senate, it wastes precious time and voting on his reelection is just around the corner.

He violated the "gentleman's agreement" over the War Powers act that has existed since its passing wherein all presidents acting consistent with it while holding the position it was unconstitutional.

I think it would be constitutionally questionable to defund the operation only partially. Quit rightly, Republicans don't want this unnecessary fight on top of all the other fights. Only a prick would act as this man has but we should know that lesson by now. After all, SCOTUS didn't dream a president would lie under oath in a civil deposition.

As a result of our circumstance, a mix of political cowardice, pragmatism leaves Congress impotent to enforce its position on Libya and the War Powers act.

Thanks. I can see where this is a difficult issue for candidates. Realistically, how do we find and ship out 12 million (or more) people from not only Mexico, but other countries as well. We can’t even keep up with people who overstay student visas. Where would we hold 12 million people before they are sent back? Do we fly them, send them on buses? How many buses would it take to 12 million people back? Do we just drop them over the border? I don’t see how we have room to put them all in prison/jail.

I just don’t see a realistic solution. And who pays? Do local governments have the responsibility of finding and holding the illegals? How many ICE agents would it take? Would we need to hire more? What about those currently serving time for crimes in jail/prison? Do we make them finish their sentences (which is expensive) or just deport them immediately? What happens when they come back, like many of them do after being deported? There really are no simple answers and the chant of “send them all back” is easier said than done.

Yep, that is exactly the argument the pro-amnesty crowd uses after they are cornered, first they deny it is amnesty they want, next they argue that we have no choice except amnesty. We saw this over and over in 2006-2007 and even here.

No one has suggested such a massive effort, for one thing voting districts get more congressional seats and representation based on ‘residents’ and $$$ so many cities have welcomed illegals and protect them.

The federal government could stop giving taxpayer goodies to illegals. Stop the food stamps. Stop the aid to dependent children. Deport them when they show up at hospitals or schools or even to report crimes. And lastly congress could pass a law that takes away automatic citizenship to children of illegals without a constitutional amendment. Diplomats children do NOT get automatic citizenship, why should illegals? It is illegal for states like Maryland to give special college tuition breaks to illegals but they do it anyway. Why? There is no penalty in the federal law.

But the next time the debate comes up the idea of cutting off the goodies will be ignored, and the straw man argument of massive deportation will be suggested again.

As to Palin’s response, nobody knows what the hell she was talking about, she obviously wanted to dodge the question.

In many cases, illegal immigrants can also receive emergency medical treatment, short-term government disaster relief and immunization against communicable diseases. Their children can attend public schools.

States may provide other benefits, such as driver’s licenses and worker’s compensation, In Kansas, for example, illegal immigrants can get tuition breaks at state universities and colleges.

And yet, estimates are that several million illegal immigrants — more precise figures are impossible to calculate, because illegal immigrants typically live under the radar — actively shun such support, fearing that government agents will swoop in and whisk them away.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25727901/ns/us_news-life/t/illegal-immigrants-spurn-needed-benefits/

So are you saying we need to have ICE agents posted at hospials and social services offices and when someone comes in who doesn’t have their “papers”, they are immediately arrested and after months waiting for hearings, do we put them on buses to the border and release them? We need to think this through. Do we bar children from attending school? I just don’t see how this plan is workable. It sounds good but it isn’t realistic.

The first thing that is ‘unworkable’ is giving 12 million poor illegals the right to Obama/Medicaid, EITC and other direct access to federal benefits, then social security and medicare. I have never seen one amnesty plan, not Bush, not McCain, not Democrats that got a CBO estimate of the costs of this and all the new illegals this would give a green light to.

In the case of hospitals they should be required to notify the government of anyone checking in without a valid ID, in return they would get re-imbursed for the bills that they normally have to eat if the patient is found to be illegal.

In schools?? Deport the parents when they show up to register their kids or show up to get the food stamps that their kids entitle them to.

Basically you don't deport them all, just the ones that get arrested (they cant have drivers licenses under real ID) or show up for government goodies at our expense, or file lawsuits against americans. That will make America much less attractive.

And cut off some funding to Cities that protect illegals.

Once you legalize (Palin called it registration) there is no end to the gravy train they will be on, and all their relatives not in the US yet. Tell Sarah we are broke... not enough $$$$$ in this country to take care of all those people.
