Thanks. Wasn’t as much work for me as it might appear, though. I have the programming on AIPNews.com that allows me to just cut and paste the source code over here. :-) We are the citizen media, right?

Unexcusable they didn’t have the gates open long before in anticipation of the melting snows and spring rains.

Everyone thinks humanity can outguess and control mother nature. In doing so we take comfort in assigning blame because it lets us think we have ultimate control.

All that water has to go somewhere. Just about the time the water from the May floods along the lower Mississippi Valley recede, they’re going to get it again. The Missouri empties into the Mississippi just above St. Louis.

I heard someone on Foxnews yesterday say that the fields that grow durm wheat are basically gone from this years harvest.Durum is what pasta is made from which reminds me I need to check my stash and if I need to buy another 20# before this hits the pricing.

This interview explains how we got to where we are ragards to the Missouri River Valley flooding and also illustrates how the flooding will last through August.

May rains were ‘real kicker' in big water year

Appreciate the prayers for those affected. We’re about a hundred miles east of the river, so we’re not among them. Actually, we’ve been a bit on the dry side here most of the spring. This water is all coming down the Missouri from the Rockies and the northern plains.

Checking in from Gretna Nebraska about 14 miles west of the river.

If you check the date on the Picasa site, you will see that those photos were taken a couple of weeks ago. Someone sent me the link to those photos in an email a few days after they were taken. Since then, the Corps has increased the water release rate from Gavins Point. Also got a bunch of rain here Friday night and are awaiting severe storms and tornadoes in the area this afternoon and evening so even more water will be entering the system. It just seems to be getting worse by the day for all the folks and businesses along the Mo.

This is a slow motion disaster that (not suprisingly) is getting minimal coverage from the MSM. There is alot of anger toward the Corps around here (based on what I hear on local talk radio and see in the local media) because of the feeling that environmental concerns trumped flood control and the protection of peoples assets. Typical attitude that birds and fish are more important than the hicks out here in flyover country.

Keep an eye on this, the story will continue to unfold over the next couple of months and the outcome will likely be VERY bad.

Thanks for the post.

You’re right. I noticed a little while ago that the pics were a bit dated. I wonder if someone has a comparable set from this week? When I get a little time later in the day I’ll dig around and see what I can find.

Admin Mod, could I prevail upon you to change the date on the original post to June 12-15? The June 26 date is a bit misleading, which is not a good thing on a story that is so important to so many people. Thanks.

Remember this the next time that government wants to close a road or shut down access or stop drilling/mining activity over concerns about man’s impact on the endangered snarfblat.
