PA Pursuing Statehood Bid No Matter What
Arutz Sheva ^ | June 24, 2011 | Gavriel Queenann

The Palestinian Authority will seek United Nations recognition for statehood in September even if peace negotiations with Israel are under way, a senior PA diplomat said Thursday.

Riyad Mansour, the PA envoy to the United Nations, said the PA was simultaneously pursuing three independent tracks: restarting negotiations, building institutions for an independent state, and gaining recognition for statehood.

“If we succeed in opening the door for negotiations, we’re not going to stop from attaining what belongs to us as Palestinians in this General Assembly starting on September 20,” Mansour insisted.

American and European efforts to restart Israeli-PA negotiations have been specifically intended to avert the PA's United Nations statehood bid, which they say is counter-productive.

"Unlike the construction in the West Bank, which is an illegal unilateral act, declaring a state is a given right which is not considered unilateral," Mansour insisted.

Israel "did not ask permission to declare a state in 1948, the US did not ask the British for permission to declare a state in 1776. Our declaration of state in a natural right and not a unilateral act," he said.

"Our independence is not one of the core issues," Mansour said.

Mansour's comments were made shortly after PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas said he was willing to 'tolerate' limited Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem in order to restart negotiations. Abbas has also demanded the release of terror-prisoners in Israeli jails before returning to the negotiating table.

Well, they are a commonwealth so one could think they were dropping that status.

Palestine becoming a state is a bit like a same sex marriage.

Just because it’s called a marriage, it isn’t , it is a sham.

So is a Palestinian State.

Actually Israel did ask permission before declaring a state. They waited about a year, getting all the diplomatic ducks in a row. There were other differences too - such as the fact that at the time the UN had control of the Mandate (which it took over from the League of Nations after the British abdicated it IIRC) and so in that case the UN had the authority to vote on the status of the land. There were other factors at play - Israel had a united government (the factions even fought each other a little bit before uniting under common cause) and of course once they did declare independence they fought a defensive war which cemented their rights. I wonder if the Palestinians want to really draw all these comparisons (of course not).

Nevertheless it looks like they have pretty close to an automatic majority but hopefully they will lose the vote as the world realizes they need to grow up and stop being coddled.

De-fund the UN and stop aid to these clowns. At least the “non budget” will be a little better and the debt ceiling can be post phoned a little more.

Well this will be a dream come true for leftists, Hillary and the Bamster they know they must complete before November 2012.

As a nation, a terrorist nation, won’t the US be precluded from sending them money?

But he admits, “declaring a state is a given right which is not considered unilateral,” Mansour insisted.

Israel “did not ask permission to declare a state in 1948, the US did not ask the British for permission to declare a state in 1776....” he said.

So Israel was exercising a natural right in 1948 when it declared. The “Nakba” was a “catastrophe” in the eyes of the Arabs only. One hell of an admission. What he omits to mention is the fact that both Israel in 1948 and the US in 1776 were in for the fights of their respective lives after declaring. We fought and prevailed. They just want to prevail with Israel’s blessings.

you’d certainly think so!
but we’ve been sending them tons of money.
and even training their troops for them!

not to mention the billions we give to Pakistan,
even after their ISI is shown to be connected with the Mumbai massacre, knowing bin Laden was living there, and much more.

and most of all, i don’t understand how with the establish clause, how we can continue giving Iraq and Afghanistan billions and literally build mosques and buy korans and prayer rugs, after they put sharia in their new constitutions, and they arrest christians for blasphemy against mohammad, or people for apostasy in leaving Islam.

good point about the “Nakba” and the fact that the Arabs denied that “natural right” they claim now, to Israel, when they invaded in 1948.

further, they omit that Palestine WAS created at the same time. but they rejected it !

...as far as i’m concerned, the offer expired 50 years ago. they had their chance and lost it.

(besides which, the modification of the Balfour Declaration in 1922 was a binding international agreement. imagine how much better the world wold be today, if that had been honored...)

Now, with the prospect of statehood once more a real possibility, Jerusalem Arabs are opting to become Israeli citizens in increasing numbers, and those in Judah and Samaria with Jordanian citizenship and enough money to git going, are crossing the Allenby Bridge. Nobody wants to be part of a state with these low-lifes in charge, but if they declare, there are going to be some real unhappy campers. Israel ought to offer them Sal Pleita, or an emigration package, and just annex already. The joke has gone on long enough, and it was never funny.
