It's fascinating to read the comments below this article. People seem to think that her congressional seat should forevermore be a shrine to Giffords and by virtue of her shooting, she has a perpetual right to that seat. That it would be cruel to remove her. Of course, anyone who calls for a recall election is going to be characterized as the latest reincarnation of Hitler, but Scracic makes some good points and he's right to call for her to do the honorable thing and resign.

If it has to be a democrat in office, I prefer one unable to fulfill the duties of the position. Any chances of getting a Republican in if she leaves?

This article is true. One of the unsaid things about Giffords is that although she seems to have been very outgoing and personable, she was an ardent environmentalist and global warming supporter.
It would be a very good thing for Ariz. and the country if she resigned.

I’m not entirely convinced that brain damage would be an impediment to being a Democrat member of the Senate -

Democrats have a history of this with Sheets Byrd and Swimmah Kennedy being the most recent examples. Not that Ms. Giffords is going to die, but her return to duty is extremely doubtful.
I read that she has until May 8, 2012 to file paperwork for reelection.

Unless Paul Sracic lives in her district, I think he should leave this matter to the people who do.

The GOP would be morons to push for her to resign.

Is she mentally capable of resigning? How much brain damage has she suffered?

To tell the truth, I expected the Dems to arrange to have her vote whatever way they wanted in absentia. Evidently that isn’t working out for some reason.
I looked up the writer, and he appears to be a liberal.

Oh, that’s just cruel and heartless. I mean, Patsy Mink served in the House while dead. Ted Kennedy served while he was nearly dead. And Robert Byrd? Might have been out of it long before the end came.
To say a Democrat can’t serve with a hole in their head is just mean-spirited and hateful. I mean, some Democrats actually do better when near death than they do when they’re functional.

This is the stupidity of idealizing the victim. I work routinely with people who have traumatic brain injury. Some of them very similar to what we know about Giffords' injury. I feel bad for them but would not want any one of them within a mile of casting a vote in Congress. The very idea is ridiculous.

What, if anything, does the Constitution say regarding the inability of a member of Congress to fulfill their sworn obligations due to incapacitation?

The media has built this woman and her husband to the level of sainthood.
I never understood what was up from day 1 when her Dad declared the shooter must have been a Tea party member. The MSM hung on to that and had daily updates on her progress, completely ignoring the others killed or hurt during the melee.
