Peter Falk -- star of the TV show "Columbo" -- died last night ... TMZ has learned.
Falk -- who suffered from Alzheimer's disease -- was 83.
A rep for the family tells TMZ, "Peter Falk, 83-year-old Academy Award nominee and star of television series, 'Columbo', died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011."
The rep continued, "Peter Falk is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage."

Good actor. All my generation actors about gone.
R.I.P., Peter. You were one of the great ones.
Prayers up for him and his family.
“Columbo” was one of my all-time favorite shows.
RIP, Peter.
He had an eye removed at an early age. In the wanning days of WWII he tried to join the military but was rejected.
He sailed on American flagged merchant ships for about 18 months.
Nobody move! I gatta go to the can and I don’t want to miss nuthin.
Falk was wonderfully unique. RIP
I’ll never forget the time I was at the old Hamburger Hamlet in Sherman Oaks, and I suddenly heard “the voice” coming from a booth not too far away from me.
“Say.. this is some terrific place you got hear..”
R.I.P
One of the great lines in all movies. From “The Inlaws”:
“Serpentine, Shelly, Serpentine!”
RIP
He was a natural.....I remember his breakout role in “Murder, Inc.”
Sad news.
In-Laws one of the funniest movies of all time.
