Is Rick Running? (GOP source says yes)
wsj.com ^ | June 23, 2011 | James Freeman

A Republican campaign veteran tells us that Texas Governor Rick Perry has decided to run for President, though the official word from Team Perry is still a definite maybe.

Our normally reliable Republican source reports that Mr. Perry has surveyed the field and decided to get in the race later this summer, perhaps around the time of the national prayer meeting that Mr. Perry is hosting on August 6 at a Houston football stadium.

Our source also reports that Mr. Perry is aiming to compete in the Iowa Straw Poll, even though it occurs just a week later, on August 13. The thinking is that apparent front-runner Mitt Romney "does not reflect the Republican Party" and is therefore vulnerable to a credible challenge from the right, especially after Mr. Romney's recent squishy remarks on global warming.

Beyond simply the August 13 event in Ames, Iowa, a big question for Mr. Perry is whether a compressed schedule would allow him to attract enough money and primary voters to win the nomination.

You would write a check to the former Texas chairman for Al Gore’s 1988 presidential campaign?

So long as he gets in early enough for his name to be on the primary ballots and the voters to know he isn’t beltway. With the legislation lined up by the Texas State Legislature, he should be able to stay in the news and get some recognition.

I doubt that there isn’t a stone unturned or a story in his past that the turds in Austin haven’t already tried to exploit. If he gets in too early, Both RINO’s and Dems will be happy to build their own characterization of him from whole cloth. With a little less time, their chance to build and repeat their lies lessens.

With a few well chosen phrases he could probably pry open my wallet.

I don't think much of Gov. Goodhair, but he can raise money on short notice. Probably easier than anyone but Palin.

The Al Gore of 23 years ago is not the wacko Al Gore of today as I doubt the Rick Perry of 23 years ago is the Rick Perry today.

I would. I campaigned for a guy who voted for Dukakis in 1988. People change, and 1988 was a long time ago.

Think Zell Miller......

Think Ronald Reagan

The money is being lined up already. That is what Haley Barbor is undoubtedly doing now. He knows the money and has it on speed dial.

Not everyone is so astute or so fortunate as to be a life long conservative. At the time (1988) Gore then 39 yoa, was considered a Southern Moderate of high moral character. Gore assailed Jesse Jackson’s foreign policy views, saying he was ‘dismayed’ by Mr. Jackson’s ‘embrace of Arafat and Castro’. Mike Dukakis won that nomination.

All this to say it looks like Perry may have had a learning experience or two since then.

Texas Governor Rick Perry has decided to run for President Rick Perry? NO THANKS!

1. TransTexas Corridor support (NAFTA highway)

2. Attempt to force Gardisil on my daughters

3. Border control flip/flop - against it before he was for it

4. Fraternizing with globalist Bilderbergers

5. Likes big government

6. Bottom line - As we say in Texas, "all hat and no cattle"

People are all over the board about Perry and so far the field seems unsettled. If Perry is in and Palin is out it will make for an interesting watch.

"Rick Perry is true to conservative principles even when others think the party
needs to go a different direction. I like that about him: he doesn't care which
way the wind blows, he acts on his beliefs. That's why I am supporting

I agree with you, not to mention also that Tipper was practically the poster girl for social conservatism back then. I remember my teenagers rolling their eyes at the very mention of her. Different times.

You are the onw that’s “all hat no cattle”.

I’m looking forward to Perry going after obami. Should be fun.

I want someone who understands that drilling and exploration for gas and oil creates jobs. Someone who knows the EPA is the enemy. Someone who knows the NLRB and unions are the enemy. Someone who knows that everything the POS obami stands for is wrong.

Perry fits that to me, especially if Sarah doesn’t run.

reports that Mr. Perry has surveyed the field and decided to get in the race later this summer

Which quite clearly means he has not decided to run yet. If he had, he would not be waiting till "later this summer".

Beyond simply the August 13 event in Ames, Iowa, a big question for Mr. Perry is whether a compressed schedule would allow him to attract enough money and primary voters to win the nomination. Perry campaign adviser David Carney says that question still hasn't been answered, and even a positive verdict doesn't necessarily mean the Texan would enter the race. "Then he's got to saddle up and do a gut check" to determine if he's ready for the rigors of a presidential run, says Mr. Carney.

Which again makes it pretty obvious Perry has not yet decided to run. If he were actually sure he was running and so worried about the compressed schedule, Perry would jump in the race pretty much immediately.

While I do suspect Perry is thinking of running, this article is just more speculation. My guess is Perry is still trying to determine what Palin is going to do, and Palin probably just hasn't decided yet.

If that happens and Perry wins the nomination, most conservatives will have no trouble supporting him.

Some of the anti-Perry stuff you see now is just folks who know he'd be an immediate first tier anti-Romney candidate who would immediately put several of the long shots out to pasture. If Perry is in and Palin doesn't run, the anti Romney fight probably comes down to Perry and Bachmann. Guys like Pawlenty, Cain, Santorum, etc would be essentially knocked out of the running.

It is being reported that Perry already has crews on the ground in key states and he will enter in August.
