The Frederick News Post ^ | 6/22/11 | Brian Englar

Posted on 06/22/2011 4:43:31 PM PDT by RetroSexual

A Frederick man is charged with wielding a 3-foot-long sword as he walked down a city sidewalk, telling frightened witnesses he intended to kill two people he said attacked him.

Orlando DeJesus Martinez-Navas, 30, is charged with carrying a dangerous weapon with intent to injure and concealing a dangerous weapon. He is also being held on a warrant for a failure to appear from January 2009 on charges of driving without a license.

Martinez-Navas is being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center in lieu of two separate bails totaling $7,600. He also has an immigration detainer, according to the jail's holding unit, meaning he has been identified by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials as a candidate for deportation.

I played Baldurs Gate several times - and the sequels. I don’t remember a Robe of Vecna?

How does one go walking down the street and conceal a 3 foot sword?

Not easily. I walked the streets of downtown San Francisco with my antique sword a few years ago, sheathed and slung over my back. I was taking it to a Japanese sword expert in Japantown to have it inspected and appraised. Nearest parking that day was about six blocks away. No one batted an eye, just got curious smiles. Even when I shopped for a few groceries in a Japanese food market. You can't really hide something that long.

Sheesh, first the Dread Gazebo, now The Head of Vecna. What's next, whip of annihilation?

I suspect that Mr Welch may be making an appearance.

CA's open carry laws allow to carry a fixed blade knife (sword) openly on the belt. I don't know if carrying it over the back is prohibited; it's probably something a LEO would have to decide on the spot.

But some cities have stricter rules, and people were stopped for carrying swords in a way that is legal in the state but not in this particular municipality.

One easy way to avoid the problem (unless you want to test the LEO response) is to put the sword into a long box, or to wrap it. I understand that it is not good to give up on doing certain legal things because of the pressure, but everyone picks their own battles. It's also legal to stand in the street and sell powdered sugar in small plastic bags, but a rational person will not be doing that.

Alright, I remember the “Hand of Vecna.” I remember the “Eye of Vecna.” I even recall the “Teeth of Delanar(sp?).” But I don’t remember the “Head of Vecna.”

“Sheesh, first the Dread Gazebo, now The Head of Vecna. What’s next, whip of annihilation?”

I have no idea what that means.

All I know is that when I see a thread entitled “Man Accused Of Wielding Sword”, I click on the link.

;o)

I can believe that people fell for the Head of Vecna in a game setting.
They have to believe a bunch of bizarre things in a game setting, so why not a head that grants you powers much like the dudes eye and hand do?
I have to admit, it was a good set up.

The Dread Gazebo got mentioned because of the Tale of Eric and teh Dread Gazebo.
[Somebody ran a boat into a gazebo yesterday.]
So when I saw this thread about a dude with a sword, naturally what followed was, “Oh no, not the Head of Vecna again..”

As for the Whip of Annihilation, it is an overpowered weapon item that may or may not exist in the RPG gaming world.

If you really want to freak some players out, try invisible caltrops (sp). Imagine large, invisible, extremely sharp “jack” like objects. It took them awhile to realize why they kept getting hurt when walking through a certain passage.

Thank you for not going there.

I would have been yahooing all night. I don’t “do” google.

However, I do remember a bit of The Highlander. He was the Falcon Crest’s evil mom’s son. lol
