Organizers of the liberal Netroots Nation conference to be held in Providence in summer 2012 have taken steps to keep a traditional conservative counter-event at a distance.
The conservative conference RightOnline, a project of the Virginia-based group Americans for Prosperity, has staged its convention in the same city around the same time as Netroots Nation since 2008.
Raven Brooks, Netroots Nation's executive director, said Tuesday the group had a noncompete clause in its contracts with the Rhode Island Convention Center and two Providence hotels.
"Good luck finding a venue in 2012," he tweeted over the weekend, in reference to RightOnline. "Two words, non-compete clause. Hugs and kisses."
Erik Telford, executive director of RightOnline, said his group has made "no firm decisions" on where to hold its 2012 conference. Providence is a top contender, but locations on the West Coast, among others, are also under consideration.
Brooks told The Associated Press his group decided to seek the clauses when it learned RightOnline was holding its 2011 event in the Netroots headquarters hotel in Minneapolis.

A contract has to have a detriment & benefit for both parties.
Does that mean that Netroot booked all rooms and the convention center for the rest of the Summer?
If not, I only see a detriment for the hotels & convention center. Their business plan is to book everything possible.
Two polar opposites are in competition? For what?
Big whoop. There are at least 10 major hotels in Providence. So the RightOnline will just have to deal with 8 of the others. Nice try Commie Pinkos. You don't have the control you wish you had.
This means at most that the two affected hotels agreed not to advertise special rates for the rival group. I don’t think this is even legal (restraint of trade, and all that). But hey, boycott those hotels, they are the ones who are going to be hurting.
No competition.
That should be perfect for the Left.
They have been striving for no competition for years.
