Since when does being a godmother imply guardianship? Maybe there was no ulterior motive on Cindy McCain’s part.
The godparents are supposed to help the child's parents raise the child in the Christian faith, and in some cases, take over the raising of the child if both parents die. It's not as usual today but that is the tradition of being a godparent.
Cindy probably knew that.
Since forever.
I find it hard to believe she believes in God.
I thought the whole point of a godmother was guardianship, in the event of something untoward.
Perhaps it isn't considered by many to be the case today in this country, but the position of "godparent", when it was established by custom was *not* an 'implication' of guardianship, it was an outright commitment in the event something happened to the birth parents. This still holds true in places with a strong Catholic character to the society...

Anyone who accepts the role of a Godparent assumes a role of spiritual guardianship. That's what being a Godparent is about.
Maybe there was no ulterior motive. But I would be insulted too, as it trivializes something that is important to a religious person.
Cindy McCain might not have intended the slight due to her ignorance, but it was there anyway.
The impression given is that Mrs McCain thought she was honoring the child, that Bristol should have been honored to have such an offer from a high born woman. Barf.....
