Some people who need medical care but can't afford it go to the emergency room. Others just hope they'll get better. James Richard Verone robbed a bank.
Earlier this month, Verone (pictured), a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gaston, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up.
He's now in jail and has an appointment with a doctor this week.
Verone's problems started when he lost the job he'd held for 17 years as a Coca Cola deliveryman, amid the economic downturn. He found new work driving a truck, but it didn't last. Eventually, he took a part-time position at the convenience store.
But Verone's body wasn't up to it. The bending and lifting made his back ache. He had problems with his left foot, making him limp. He also suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.
Then he noticed a protrusion on his chest. "The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept," Verone told the Gaston Gazette. "I kind of hit a brick wall with everything."

Verone should have changed his name to “Jose Pablo Martinez” and he would’ve gotten free surgery and free healthcare courtesy of the mexifornian taxpayers..
Unfortunately we will see more of this as the healthcare system collapses.
He also lost something called PRIDE.
Collectivists of every stripe - communist, socialist, progressive, liberal, Leftist, you name it - LOVE the disgust conservatives have for the poor. It gives them all the political ammunition they'd ever need for a thousand years.
Personally, I think the collectivist threat is direct and absolute Divine justice against a Christian people who have paid mere lip service to what Jesus himself - not some interpreter - said was his most important commandment: "Love each other as I have loved you."
I know, I know, that's an incredibly difficult command to understand. Even with Jesus's explicit teaching through the parable of the Good Samaritan, it remains highly mysterious.
That's why, instead, we get to fight the endless onslaught of murderous collectivism exploiting our denial - until we finally realize that Jesus wasn't kidding.
Because He also said "the poor will always be with you." So what it boils down to is, we volunteer to deal with the problem - or collectivists use the issue to empower the state.
And step one is to stop sneering, and remember - yes, even with the drunks and the drug addicts and the insane and especially those without money - "there, but for the grace of God, go I."
Hmm... I dunno. He might regret his decision, because government doctors are worse treatment than the disease oftentimes.
I think he lost his pride when he lost his job.It is sad.
I just read the entire article it actually promotes ObamaCare when with ObamaCare if you don’t have health care you go to jail. Plus with so many unemployed= no health insurance. The article promoting ObamaCare makes no sense.
Sniff....sniff.....
>”...the disgust conservatives have for the poor.”<
Are you nuts or just uninformed?
Glad I'm not the only one who spotted that post.
Of any kind, under any circumstances. None. Zip. Nada.
Part of the price you pay for doing the crime.
You are not the only one who spotted it.
People like Talisker disgust me. He is obviously of the group that believes it is “justified” to rob Peter to pay Paul.
Nevermind what Peter thinks of him...and Paul.
This leech isn't just seeking medical attention, he is doing his retirement planning.
Putting aside the obvious propaganda by the writer and Yahoo, if I ever got that desperate, I would probably just rack up multiple emergency room bills to get my problems fixed and not pay until I could. I guess it would be better to be poor with bad credit and most importantly, free, than in jail with caged animals.
Honesty;
Study this face carefully, and then go look in the mirror. This is the face of the “new reality” in America. The American public has been sold out by the powers that be, and we will all pay the price sooner or later. Our tax dollars are going toward financing corporate greed and corrupt politicians, etc. None of us are immune.
Tom:
Exactly my plan if I run into major issues in the future....
Signed
No job 6+ years now (yes, despite hundreds and hundreds of applications!), No House, No more IRA, no wife with benefits...no kids to take care of me...no health care insurance....MBA BA degrees are worthless since I am over 55 and the big business HR departments are practicing cost cutting (oursorcing and H1Bs!) and age discrimination with a florish only the wall street crooks and politicians could appreciate...
Sooo...jail is starting to look like a great place to get some treatment and some food...
I agree. Criminals should get NO medical treatment of any kind. Problem solved.
“What would Jesus say about a country that treats its poor with more contempt than its criminals? “
Invalid statement. Food Stamps, WIC, Housing, County medical treatment, etc.
Unfortunately this guy is the wrong color to be given these things without having to hire a lawyer and sue the government.
Contempt for the POOR? This guy is a dipshit of the highest degree! Read the Investors article about this sob story. There are multiple places this dude could have gotten free care nearby. THAT is true compassion, doctors, nurses, and even...gasp... HOSPITALS volunteering time, money and labor to help the poor. That’s what Jesus was talking about. Not using Caesar to redistibute wealth from others. WE are to give, not to support robbery by the State.
