There seems to be something about large private planes that the Obama’s cannot get enough of.

It is a pun from a song in the Lion King that was Hakuna Matada.

She could have met with the President at 9 AM, but that was inconvenient since she was speaking with someone more important—Mandela. I agree with the President, i.e., you meet with me when I deem it convenient, not when Michelle thinks it is convenient. She is a guest in South Africa. Big diplomatic gaffe on Michelle.

“She could have met with the President at 9 AM, “

Does that mean she was actually extended the offer - or that after the fact, in an “almost attempt” at diplomacy, someone spins that there was an “opening” in the schedule for the President - but moochie was already booked?

Diplomatic gaff indeed, IF it was not just a face saving spin. I suspect the real diplomatic thing that occured was the Presidents people making this unlikely claim that moochie “could have” met with the President.

South African officials insisted that Mr Zuma was simply busy – and Mrs Obama had rejected the offer of a meeting at 9am on Wednesday because she was making a speech in Soweto.

Zizi Kodwa, Mr Zuma’s spokesman, refused to discuss the president’s appointments in the coming days, but said his diary was full and could not easily be changed.

“Even when the president is in South Africa, he is not on holiday and cannot meet anybody at any time,” he said. “Why is he not meeting the head of state of an African country who is coming to South Africa? Because he has a schedule.” Clayson Monyela, spokesman for South Africa’s foreign office, said that since Mrs Obama is not a head of state or cabinet minister, there was no onus on Mr Zuma to meet her.

Based on my 28 years as a diplomat, it is obvious what happened. Michelle made the mistake of scheduling a meeting with Mandela first before meeting with the current head of state. I am sure that the President extended the invitation at the same time to let Michelle know that she had a choice--meeting with him first or rescheduling the Mandela visit. It is simply a matter of protocol.

I recall something similar happening when Reagan scheduled a meeting with the Pope in the Vatican at the time when developments were heating up in Poland. Reagan went to Italy primarily to meet with the Pope, but the Italians insisted that Reagan meet first with the Italian PM. After all, Reagan was landing in Italy and protocol had to be followed. And Reagan did just that.

Michelle Obama should have been properly briefed by the State Department and our Embassy that she should meet first with the President. She may just decided to ignore the advice and do her own thing. There were consequences and I applaud the President for making the point.

“Summer vacation” on the taxpayers dime, no dollar, sounds about right to me.
