A mother who shocked America by drowning her five children in the bathtub may be freed by the end of the year, according to her lawyer.
Andrea Yates systematically murdered her children, aged between six months and seven years, at her suburban Clear Lake, Texas, home ten years ago today.
She then dialled 911 and told the first police officer who arrived at the house: 'I just killed my kids.'

“His treatment of this woman was absolutely horrible and he needs to be behind bars for abuse for life. He is a MONSTER!”
Oh, the “Devil made me do it” defense? That’s pure crap.
She could have walked out and left them for the MIL to care for. She could have filed for divorce. She chose to stay and murder.
Mark my words, she’ll kill again.
Will you blame the victims then as well? I’ll be sure to bump you when it occurs. I’d say within 5 years.
The state didn’t charge her with all of the children’s murders. I think there is still two left they can charge her with, since there is no statute of limitations for murder.
It might be worth it.
He set it all up by his treatment of her and the children...but no one seems to think that matters.
He deliberately did not comply with recomendations , nor did his family, of stopping this train wreck.
It is unbelievable how many posters have no idea of this whole story. Thanks for your posts to clear up so many ingoramouses..ha.
A lot of women are mentally and emotionally abused by their husbands....THEY DIDN'T KILL THEIR KIDS.
Fry the bitch!
Can’t on this murder court action.
Some of us are quite aware of the whole story, we just believe that a dangerous mass murderer should never see the light of day again.
She crossed the line in rationalizing murder, then methodically carrying it out in between the time her husband left for work and her MIL was supposed to show up.
She can never be trusted on the outside to be 100% med compliant and therefore does not deserve one moment of freedom ever again. We used to have the guts to institutionalize these people due to them being a danger to society.
That's the exact situation we have here. She was institutionalized but is now being released. One may question the action/justification of release but she has served what was imposed upon her by the legal system.
There are still two of the murders she can be charged with. You would think that the state hospital would be a lot more cautious after they released a violent murderer who murdered a child just a few months later.
There should be zero release of violent murderers. Shrinks are part of the reason she acted out her murderous compulsion when they refused to put her back on haldol. Shrinks should not be the last word on releasing her.
There are still two of the murders she can be charged with.
That is correct and it will be interesting to see if the state chooses to proceed with another trial.
Thanks for explaining how everyone is exactly alike mentally and physically and we all react EXACTLY the same to everything in our lives. So I guess we will all die of the same disease in the end, right? sarcasm (in case you don’t recognize it)
This woman was obviously not playing with a full deck from the beginning and her mental deterioration was ignored by everyone. Does that mean I think she should get out? NO absolutely not I hope she stays locked up someplace for the rest of her life.
I guess her husband will have to wait and get his when he meets his maker, the evil SOB!
He had Alzheimer's...was there more?
Having been around insane people, you know that they often don’t understand that what they’re thinking and doing doesn’t make sense. And, of course, women who stay in abusive relationships have baggage coming into the relationship that make them willing to stay even in horrible situations which only adds to their delusions of what “normal” is.
Thank you for your nice words. I’m afraid, though, that I don’t deserve the compliments. My mother and my relationship has been strained for years, and her lack of touch with reality has only made it worse. She was likely a nice person before she spent years with my father, but she hasn’t been that person for 30+ years. Only one of her sisters, one of the most patient people on the planet, still keeps in touch with her.
That's true.
The Voice has told my mother that if she doesn't do what it says, it will "forget her name." To her this means that God will send her to hell when she dies unless she does what the voice says. She's done plenty of things that she didn't want to do, that no rational person would do, because she believes the voice holds this power over her. Were the voice to tell her to kill children, she very likely might do it -- because she's not in her right mind. I wouldn't put it past her to do almost anything the voice tells her because she believes it's God doing the talking.
This may very well be something that really has to be lived to be believed. I wouldn't doubt it. So many things I scoffed at aren't so far fetched after what I've seen in the past few years. What I thought was "normal" wasn't. What looked from the outside like "normal" and even loving, wasn't. It's amazing how much can be wrong and seemingly no one is aware of it.

Yes, I can definatly identify with that. Either way, have you considered asking your mother to take pills?
