A mother who shocked America by drowning her five children in the bathtub may be freed by the end of the year, according to her lawyer.

Andrea Yates systematically murdered her children, aged between six months and seven years, at her suburban Clear Lake, Texas, home ten years ago today.

She then dialled 911 and told the first police officer who arrived at the house: 'I just killed my kids.'

OMG!

this thread has degenerated in its short lifespan!
You’re waxing eloquent about dolphins and I keep bringing up the Biblical goats going over the cliff!

It has been a good discussion and many Freepers had some good sharing!

You are obsessed with trying to understand Andrea Yates. I am not in the least bit interested in her problems nor understanding her. She crossed the line when she murdered her five children. I could care less how crazy she was.

You are way out of bounds. Give Yeats the same death sentence as the “non-crazy” murderers.

I agree with that. There is no reasoning with people who somehow make a living off dead children.

That’s ridiculous. Both his mother and hers were taking turns being there during the day. The MIL stayed for several months. She drowned the children during a short lapse in coverage.

Oh, please. Susan Smith was perfectly “sane”. She was also selfish and evil.

I’m not sure if you understand postpartum psychosis... but it really wasn’t her fault.

That being said, it is hard to realize that she is getting out of treatment soon. Her poor children suffered horrible deaths. The mother in me wants her to never be allowed to parent again.

We had this same tragedy occur in our family. No matter what happens, it is terribly sad.

Andrea Yates wasn't selfish. You're right about Susan Smith.

I believe you are wrong about the MIL being with Andrea all day...that is what her shrink was told but I don't think it was true.

Most women suffering from PPD do not kill their children.. this was postpartum PSYCHOSIS.

It happened in our family. And a friend of mine was hospitalized with PPP... thankfully she did not kill her children, but she was very ill. She did not have any more children after that.

Please don’t think that it can’t happen. Because it does.

Then you are accusing the MIL of lying under oath. That was directly from the trial testimony.

She was staying in a motel, and would spend most of the day helping with the children. That woman PLANNED to murder those children.

No disrespect, but I do understand murder, and that's what it was, despite whatever psycho-babble term you want to attach to it.

It is terribly sad, but a crime, nonetheless, she deserves the same as the children she murdered!

“Good - maybe she’ll wake up, take her own life, and we can be done with this loser.”

You know, your posts seems really flippant.

I remember that when this happened I said aloud, “Why didn’t APY just kill herself while she was at it?” I said this unintentionally in front of my cousin, a survivor of a postpartum psychosis episode (his mother killed his father, sister and herself but did not kill him at 3 months old). And then I realized... despite what had happened, it wasn’t her fault and wouldn’t he rather have his mother here with him (and us)?

We can learn from life that having compassion and love is much more important than having “justice”.

Did you miss the part that she admitted she had thought about it for weeks? She thought she was a bad mother. She got that right!

There is no question that she was thought to be "nuts" by the people around her...and was being treated.

It's probably her history of mental problems that saved her rear. Wouldn't surprise me if that idiot Rusty wasn't trying to get her pregnant again.

Why was her MIL staying in a motel?

I'm not trying to change your mind and you aren't going to change mine, so I' going to bed.

If this woman didn't qualify as insane, nobody does. She had a long documented history of mental illness.

However, I really worry about her being released. I heard some of her family members speaking about a year ago.
They said that she has her good and bad days. There are days that she doesn't know her children are dead, and will ask how they are doing.

Gee. The MIL was being polite and allowing the family to have some time alone together.

I doubt she flew in to help because she was some evil domineering horror. She refused to help the prosecution get the death penalty. That’s pretty forgiving.

You seem to have pictures in your head of her chained up in a dungeon by her evil family. That simply isn’t the case.

Yep, she was sane enough to do this in the less than one hour between the time RY left for work and her MIL scheduled to show up. She was also sane enough to immediately call the police and confess.

No, even our legal system has different terms for killing/murder/manslaughter.

Yes, she killed her children. But she was psychotic at the time, brought on by her postpartum psychosis.

Like I said, I would hope that she never parents again, and I feel so horribly about what happened to those children. But it wasn’t her fault. It would be easier just to say it was and to want her to be executed. It wasn’t her fault.

“Did you miss the part that she admitted she had thought about it for weeks?”

My aunt told my grandmother that she had some strange thoughts...that she should be happy but wasn’t and didn’t understand it. Everyone just brushed it off.

It’s not necessarily a situation where you immediately snap. It’s a chemical unbalance.
