Poll: Majority says military involved in too many places
The Hill ^ | 06/20/11 | Ian Swanson

An overwhelming number of voters believe the United States is involved in too many foreign conflicts and should pull back its troops, according to a new poll conducted for The Hill.

Seventy-two percent of those polled said the United States is fighting in too many places, with only 16 percent saying the current level of engagement represented an appropriate level. Twelve percent said they weren’t sure.

Voters also do not think having U.S. soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq has made the country safer, according to the poll.

Thirty-seven percent said the continued presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan makes no impact on national security, while another 17 percent said it makes the United States less safe. By contrast, 36 percent said the United States is safer because forces are in Afghanistan.

For what polls are worth?

There one part that I think needs more attention. For the question, "Is our Country safer with U.S. troops in Afghanistan or Iraq", I'd prefer asking "Will our country be safer if our troops continue fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq in the future. We can't make future decisions and change the past.

It's similar to "Are we safer because we still have troops in Germany, Japan, South Korea, etc." Except, Germany, Japan, South Korea have become our allies. I'm thinking Afghanistan or Iraq will not become so friendly.

You’re right, Charly - any country with a muslim-majority religion should remain suspect because it is absolutely tied to 7th-century beliefs.

We need to consider Roman history. Among other things, like in the States, when their military got spread very thin, the empire fell. Nobody was home to lock the doors.

Exactly. Our troops should first of all protect our borders, not those of S. Korea and other nations. Like Michelle Malkin wrote, we are being invaded. And those in power often are taking the side of the invaders.

We don't have to militarize the border. Do what President Truman did in the 1940s. Take away the jobs and freebees. They'll go home on their own.

Shut down the drug markets in the U.S. and the Mexican drug cartels, south of the border, will go out of business.

It's $$$$ attracting all three groups. There's no need to shoot them. Just stop paying them to be outlaws.

There was no category for "not fighting in enough places"

Majority says military involved in too many places

There everywhere, except on our violent, country killing borders.

Your talking about something that does not exist.

And will likely not ever happen. Is is not clear, the fix is in and the political corrupt insiders won't allow it regardless?

For decades, Americans have screamed, voted for, petitioned, and volunteered to stop this epic country killing invasion, only to have the last president call them, "Vigilantes" as he celebrated Cinco De Mayo up in the White House.

The last President? Voting for Bush kept Gore and Kerry out of the White House. With McCain, too many people thought it was no longer worth the effort. I wonder if the Republicans in Washington have figured that out yet??? If the RINOs keep it up, Obama's gonna get reelected!

The last president made American citizenship all but pointless.

Once again, your talking about something that doesn't even exist.

The globe trotting nation building policy of the progressives in both parties, is too expensive and it is useless in Muslim nations. It is also time for the US to stop trying to purchase global allies with industry and money we don’t have. This is a one worlder policy/ideology. It is bringing the US down.

Also, it is time our allies build their own militaries to defend themselves. Nato in Libya has shown that our European allies have named our military as their military and they have little to none of their own. This makes Americans their slaves.
