Perry vetoes texting while driving ban, 22 other bills
Statesman.com ^ | Friday, June 17, 2011 | Mike Ward

Perry said that texting while driving "is reckless and irresponsible" but that he saw the bill as "a government effort to micromanage the behavior of adults."

"I am proud Texas will continue to live within its means while encouraging job creation and maintaining essential services," Perry said in a statement. "After thoroughly reviewing all legislation that reached my desk, there were some bills that would have done more harm than good to Texans, and I have used my authority to veto them."

Still scratching my head on this one Don’t know what to label any adult who is texting at 70 mph. Maybe acting like a child?

Can't agree with him on this one.

"a government effort to micromanage the behavior of adults."

Does this mean underage drivers in TX are prohibited but not adults?

Wow! Common sense alert.

Good move by Perry, and I am genuinely surprised.

This bill gave me the creeps. Just think about what kind of authority (to search and seize your smart phone law) enforcement would claim when they suspect you of texting.

Cops are already seizing phones in other states during routine traffic stops. Dangerous stuff.

Sorry, but the gov is wrong on this. It’s not about micromanaging behavior of adults , it’s about my right to not be killed by some idiot texting while driving. I don’t care if idiots wants= to kill themselves, but the point of the law is to protect me from them. Texting while driving is NOT a victimless crime.

We don't need more laws...there is already a law on the book allowing for LEO to stop a driver and fine them for being distracted. A texting driver is distracted.

Put that law to use on texting drivers and make-up applying drivers while you are at it. I have personally witnessed a woman with a foot on the dash paiting her toenails while driving - in heavy traffic but moving at about 50 MPH.

There’s a young girl here that is highly unlikely to be texting while driving for a while.

I was in the right lane on my scooter, she in the left driving up the highway when she started drifting into my lane. I tootled my horn to warn her, but the ‘phone was more important than some horn blowing.

I then planted my boot into her brand new Lexus’ passenger side door, leaving a good sized dent and bootprint. The look on her face said it all: she had forgotten she was even driving!

Explain THAT to daddy, you self-absorbed inconsiderate little (rhymes with rich).

How long have there been laws on the books that make driving while drunk illegal? People continue to do it, and no law stops them.

The national drinking age is 21, but that doesn’t stop anybody not yet that age from drinking, whether it be at a bar or someone’s home (I’ve done both before turning 21).

A law in Texas making it illegal to text while driving will not stop people from texting while driving.

I don't want the government to protect me from anything except fraudulent business deals and invading armies.

Almost every bad thing that the government does is being done under the auspices of "protecting" me. I think the quality of life in this country goes down in direct proportion to how much "government protection" we experience.

Life isn't perfect. Life isn't safe. I'm prepared to face those facts and simply live.

Are DUI laws “micromanaging lives?” Because studies - and countless daily eyewitness accounts by yours truly - show that the idiots who text while driving are as attentive as those who are drunk.

I HATE driving texters. maybe on wide open pin-straight west Texas roads it’s fine, but not here on our northeastern highways.

Now, I live in a state (CT) where texting (and talking with a handheld device) while driving is illegal. Once in a while, the cops actually set up “stings” and the lines of cars about to receive fines is always 10 deep. (But incidents of cops actually “chasing” and pulling over texters are extremely rare, if even existent.)

As one who has been rear-ended once and nearly missed 10 more times by these idiots on congested highways at 70 mph, I’m all for anti-texting while driving laws.

And imagine, how any texts are anything mroe than banal stupidity anyway? You want to die because some jerk just HAD to reply at 70MPH “LOLz, HMU!” or whatever.

IIRC, Perry has vetoed more bills than all other goobernors
put together.

I see that as a good thing.
