The massacre happened at about 10:20 a.m. inside a family-owned pharmacy in a small cluster of medical offices in Medford, a middle-class hamlet on Long Island about 60 miles east of New York City.
Police rushed to the scene after getting a 911 call from someone in the pharmacy's parking lot. When they arrived, they found two employees and two customers dead, said Suffolk County Police Department's Chief of Detectives Dominick Varrone. No one inside the shop survived.
Suffolk County Police identified the dead employees as Raymond Ferguson, 45, of Centereach, and Jennifer Mejia, 17, of East Patchogue. Bryon Sheffield, 71, of Medford, and Jamie Taccetta, a 33-year-old woman from Farmingville, were identified as the two customers.
Rene Mejia, of Medford, said one of the victims was his daughter, Jennifer. He said she worked part-time at the pharmacy while attending Bellport High School, where she was finishing her senior year.
"I don't know what happened," he said. "She was supposed to graduate Thursday."
The pharmacy, Haven Drugs, had opened for business at 10 a.m., and Varrone said investigators' initial belief was that a single gunman was responsible for the bloodbath, and that the motive was robbery. Just how the shooting unfolded, and why, were unclear, he said.
and why, were unclear
Seems pretty obvious to me that an evil bastard didn't want any witnesses.
nads = hands NEED MORE COFFEE!!!!
You’re probably safer in some parts of NYC than you are on Long Island. It’s crazy!
Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge, NY doesn’t have the death penalty.
What a horrible, horrible story. Unbelievable someone would murder four people in cold blood for drugs. Hope they catch him but nothing will bring back the victims.
We can't even execute cop killers in this state. And duty-to-retreat is still on the books as well.
It happened on Long Island, not NYC. NY state still has very stringent gun control though - enough to have deterred any of the victims from being able to defend themselves.* A vision of the world that Democrats many Republicans and all liberals want - a world where only the police and military can legally be armed. I believe this district is adjacent to Carolyn McCarthy's (arguably the most rabid anti-gun fanatic in Kongress) district.
*The major premise that gun control advocates want you to believe is that the more helpless you are the safer you are. Doesn't make sense to me, but I'm not a liberal.
I get your meaning although I would argue that murder is murder, and killing a cop is no worse than killing a clerk or a shopper. Fortunately both Florida and Georgia have death penalty laws.
The perp will be someone known to at least one of the victims.
They will catch him quickly by searching all the Amish communities, the Christian extremist camps, and the entire state of Idaho.
And the "compounds" of FR posters. I guess anyone who owns more than one gun has a compound as opposed to a residence or a house.
Good post!
On this morning’s show on NYC’s WOR radio, John Gambling, while commenting on this story, reiterated his mindless belief that it was the gun and those who support gun ownership that was responsible for these murders. I’m certain this will come up again when he has his scheduled Friday morning love fest with the diminutive, nasal, anti-Constitution, Michael Bloomberg, billionaire mayor of NYC and guiding light of the casually assembled, occasionally extra legal, “Mayors against Guns”.
Why is Gambling still on the air? There is nothing else on worth listening to until 10 a.m.
Woo hoo! I am now the proud owner of a 'compound' with multiple firearms and 'thousands of rounds' of ammunition.
Too bad that the vast majority of those rounds are in .22LR and occupy a space smaller than a loaf of bread.
Freudian slip, no doubt!
It is my personal belief that liberals have parts of their brains removed and little tape recorders inserted that play the standard liberal mantra when triggered by certain stimuli. They obviously never bother to actually THINK about what they're saying. And I'll give you a prediction for free. If pressed about NY's already onerous restriction (but only on the law abiding) he will say "We just didn't go far enough."
In the liberal mind, any legislation which actually makes a problem worse is making it worse because there isn't enough of it. The logic here is something like "no matter how bad we make it, if we just make it worse, it will get better." This applies to taxation, welfare, guncontrol - just about every liberal icon. I don't pretend to understand it, just saying what I've observed over the years.
No, wait. If they were Tea Partiers, I'm sure that would've been mentioned in the story.
I don’t have any guns at all (no, really, honestly)
Possibly, though I'm generally a crappy typist
