US Republicans eyeing Texas governor for president

NEW ORLEANS — Four years after George W. Bush left the White House, some US Republicans are pinning their hopes on his successor as Texas governor to triumph over President Barack Obama in the 2012 election.

Governor Rick Perry, who has openly flirted with running and said he will decide soon whether to throw his hat in the ring, was due Saturday to address delegates to an influential Republican Party gathering in this party city.

Perry isn't on the Southern Republican Leadership Conference straw poll ballot, but some of the delegates here say they like what they have seen so far from the nation's longest-serving governor.

"I'm hoping that Rick Perry makes a bid," said Regina Wilson, a Louisiana resident. "He can be strong when he needs to be strong, I think he has good thoughts, and I think he has the strength we need."

Former Republican vice presidential candidate and archconservative "Tea Party" movement darling Sarah Palin grins from a button on O. P. Ditch's shirt, but the 22-year US Air Force veteran says he likes what he sees in Perry.

"I want to hear what he has to say, and see if he jumps in," said Ditch, 73, adding "I think recently he's done a real good job with the state of Texas."

"I was enthused about him, about the potential for him jumping in because I know he's a good friend of the governor's (Palin), so if she thinks he's a good guy, I think he's a good guy," said Ditch. "If she doesn't run."

Hate? Please! Many of us are just being clear eyed when it comes to Perry after watching him for so many years. Guardasil, no border protection, Trans-Texas Corridor, etc. Perry is no conservative.

Medina was just another turd sandwich the douche Perry ran against. Another person in a long line of very bad candidates. Bill White, Kinky, Hutchinson, etc.

Rick Perry in spotlight at major GOP gathering

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/06/18/rick-perry-in-spotlight-at-major-gop-gathering/

“New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) - It’s 10 a.m. local time and it’s already 89 degrees outside.

Inside, presidential politics will be heating up in a few hours, when Rick Perry will take the stage here at the Republican Leadership Conference 2011.”

Presumably he already spoke by now.

Article also mentions that Perry is not on the ballot of the straw poll, but Palin is.

Last year Romney won the poll with one more vote than Ron Paul. So I am not sure how much does this mean anyway.

[excerpt].....Perry and Palin bonded in April 2008 at a forum that the Republican Governors Association sponsored, and he campaigned with her in Texas during the 2008 presidential race. She returned the favor when Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison challenged him for reelection in the 2010 GOP gubernatorial primary.

“He walks the walk of a true conservative,” Palin wrote in a letter distributed to members of the Texas Federation of Republican Women. “He sticks by his guns — and you know how I feel about guns.”

Palin also headlined a high-profile rally for Perry last year, attended by thousands of people on Super Bowl Sunday, about a week before the start of early voting. He handily won reelection.

One Texas Republican who is convinced that Perry will run for president is Dan Patrick, a state senator and possible U.S. Senate candidate; he calls the governor “conservative lightning in a bottle.” Patrick said that description also applies to Palin — and Bachmann. But he suggested that a Perry decision to run for president might preempt a bid by Palin.

“If too many conservatives get in, they will divide the grassroots base and allow someone else to get the nomination,” said Patrick, who has met Palin several times and describes himself as an admirer. “Palin and Perry understand that and know that the bigger picture is to win. If one steps forward first, the other may see a different role.”..... [end excerpt]

That must be it, Perry just hasn't had anyone of substance to run against.

That must be it.

[excerpt]”...Perry was greeted warmly by the crowd, and left to a standing ovation.

“Every life is precious,” Perry said, as his remarks were repeated by a translator in Spanish. He said the direction of stem cell research under the Obama administration was “turning the remains of unborn children into nothing more than raw material.”

A 1996 law prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars in work that harms an embryo, so private money has been used to cull batches of the cells. Those batches can reproduce in lab dishes indefinitely, and the Obama administration issued rules permitting taxpayer dollars to be used in work on them through the National Institutes of Health.

The administration’s rules expanded the number of stem cell lines created with private money that federally funded scientists could research, up from the 21 that President George W. Bush had allowed to 91 and counting. To qualify, parents who donate the original embryo must be told of other options, such as donating to an infertile woman.

The Obama administration is ignoring “the overriding responsibility of every government — that is to protect citizens at every stage of their lives, especially those who cannot protect themselves,” Perry said.

Perry also faulted Obama for reversing the so-called “Mexico City policy” that banned giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide information about abortions. Obama struck down the policy during his first week in office, saying it was too broad and undermined family planning in developing countries.

Under Obama “our federal tax dollars can now be used to fund abortion all over the world. With the stroke of a pen, abortion essentially became a U.S. foreign export,” Perry said....[end excerpt]

Other states leaving Secure Communities (TX expands ICE program]"As Texas moves toward expanding Secure Communities, several northern states are dropping out of the program that matches the fingerprints of those arrested against a U.S. [ICE] database.

Last week, before Gov. Rick Perry's announcement that the expansion of Secure Communities would be on the agenda for the Legislature's special session, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced his state will not take part in the program...."

Reuters: [excerpt] "Perry, in Mexico with a Texan trade mission seeking opportunities in areas like renewable energy, said the federal government’s plan to build a wall along much of the border to keep out illegal immigrants was “idiocy.”

“We need those individuals to continue to grow our economy,” Perry told a briefing with reporters.

“If you show up illegally, without your card or you’re here as a criminal element, I’m for throwing the book at those folks, but the issue of people who want to legally, thoughtfully and appropriately come to America to work and help us build our economy — we should quickly come up with a program and an identification card to do that.” [end excerpt]Source

We’ve had Muslims here for 30 years or more. Not sure if they are Ismaili
but never any reason to suspect anything wrong with them. We have to weed out the good and the bad, just like any other.

Your links to Perry going to Dallas to lay the first brick for a mosque don’t pan out.

PERRY: “To build a mosque near Ground Zero would be insensitive to the victims and families of 9/11 and would make the healing process much more difficult for everyone that was touched by this tragedy.”
