why is this a surprise?? i remember the same thing happening in vancouver after they lost the ‘94 cup to the NYRangers....
A quick Google search turns up 6 separate riots associated with Stanley Cup final or semi-final wins and losses, 5 in Canada and 1 in Buffalo, NY.

There was no Stanley Cup riot in Buffalo NY in 1999. Wikipedia is wrong on that one.
