Vivek Kundra, the first-ever federal chief information officer, is planning to leave the White House in August, according to sources.

Kundra, who has held the position for two-and-a-half years, is leaving the administration for Harvard, the sources said, although it’s unclear if he’ll be teaching or taking a more research-oriented post.

As CIO in the Office of Management and Budget, Kundra was responsible for overseeing $80 billion in federal information technology projects. In that role, he spearheaded a number of initiatives to try to make the government’s complex technology systems more efficient and less costly.

Kundra is one of three White House officials tapped to revamp the government’s use of technology. President Barack Obama also appointed Aneesh Chopra as the federal chief technology officer and Jeffrey Zients as the chief performance officer. All three positions were brand new roles in the White House.

and sounds like they were filled using H1B's. What ever happened to the good old American names like Cathcart, Peckham, and Dreedle? /obscure

One result I observed was a pronouncement by the Navy that no more "servers" could be purchased. They will be moving to machines with lots of "virtual servers" on the existing physical hardware. It's a big paradigm change for system administrators and application developers. Perhaps lower power and heat considerations, but higher risk for system failures.

The US government, along with the majority of private business, need to take computer security much more seriously. There’s far too much information electronically stored to have such lax security in place. Unless something changes very soon, we’ve only begun to see the damage that can be done by hacking.

Which can lead to huge cost savings in hardware, power, and down time.

but higher risk for system failures.

Not if it's implemented properly. Some of the virtualization platforms will detect a problem in a virtual server and automatically move the application to one that's good without the users even being aware of it. The system then notifies the admin via an SMTP message that a kernel is down.

VMware is some slick stuff and it works well.

I found a clip of that scene on YouTube

Google “Gen Dreedle’s WAC”.

That was a flat out brilliant movie - very good adaptation of the book - and what cast!

I'm currently redesigning an existing system to be web based. Fortunately, I had sufficient notice from the trade rags that this change was coming. The new design uses a message passing paradigm that is capable of being distributed over one or many different virtual machines. No kernel based IPC for obvious reasons. It is rumored that VMSphere will be in the VM solution of choice for the customer site.
