Bolton Seriously Considering Presidential Run

Bolton Seriously Considering Presidential Run
by Jason Mattera
06/15/2011

Unimpressed with the current crop of candidates and their campaign themes, former UN Ambassador John Bolton says he’s strongly considering entering the GOP presidential race and will make a decision by Labor Day, he told HUMAN EVENTS in an exclusive interview.

“I don’t see any of the Republicans in the race now who have made foreign policy a priority,” he said. “We’re sleepwalking into a real potential disaster.”

Bolton said he understands the enormous economic challenges facing the country, but national security can’t take a back seat. “Our adversaries overseas are not going to wait around for us to get our economic house in order.”

“Presidents have to walk and chew gum at the same time,” he added.

While Bolton certainly faults Obama’s inattention to matters overseas (“How to handle China and Russia in the future [and] what to do about the turmoil in the Middle East”), he also lays blame on the media. “You [didn’t] get a foreign policy question until the last half hour of the debate,” Bolton said of Monday’s New Hampshire forum sponsored and moderated by CNN.

Bolton told Human Events that he’s confident he can govern, but is gathering information and talking to people on whether running a campaign is “feasible and doable.”

“George H.W. Bush was very good at governing, [but] very bad at campaigning. Obama’s an outstanding campaigner and terrible at governance.”

So come Labor Day, get ready for possibly another new entry into a crowded field.

“I’m going to make a decision. And then I’m going to act on the decision,” Bolton concluded.

I wonder how Bolton would fare if he did jump in. He seems to favor an activitst foreign policy, but I'm not sure that's where the party is right now.

I think he would make a fine secretary of state.

I think he would make a great president but not sure Americans are ready for him. LOL He does speak his mind, that’s for sure, and I admire that. But a lot of voters like to be told what they want to hear, not necessarily the truth.

I would like to have Bolton in there to draw more attention to O’s failed foreign policy.

Bolton is a hawk and tough on terrorist sponsoring countries and potential enemies of US. At least he is not a defeatist like some who removed North Korea from the official list of rogue states. However, it is concerning our country is heading towards isolationism that only benifits the liberals.

He’d be a fringe candidate who would peel off a few more conservative votes. Mitt would love to have him in and he should stay out.

Time is running out. He would be wise to forget it. We don’t need any more candidates. This field is strong—one more isn’t going to help.

Good! If for whatever reason LTC West (my most favored) would not be willing right now to be VP...Bolton would be a fine VP; after Sarah wins the Primary.

I like him, and think he’d be great on multiple levels, but the country is focused on internal issues like the economy at this point. A campaign run on foreign policy issues probably wouldn’t resonate, even if he could make a strong case for how foreign policy issues affect the economy.

Deserves repeating:

He has a lot in his favor and I think he would be a fine President. I have NO problem with him.

But, that said... ANYONE is more capable and could do a better job than “O”.

Comparing this guy to “O” is like comparing an Olympic athlete to your 87 year old grandad!!

He’s got a snowball’s chance in hell

Never won an elective office

has no creds on the economy

My opinion of his ego is greatly diminished if he jumps into the race

I think he’d be a great SOS or SOD pick should the GOP win in 2012. I’d need to know more about his views on social issues. I’ve heard he’s indifferent on gay marriage. I’m not sure I could support someone who was pro-gay marriage even if that’s not going to be a major issue in the 2012 campaign.

I like John Bolton. He speaks the truth - he is a genuine “no spin” zone.

Seeing as the whole economic picture matters little if there is no security, he would make a good president. He would surround himself with the best team to advise him on the economy. I am not sure where he stands on social issues.

He needs to stay out. I would pass on him for Sec of State as well.

Why?

“The Libyan strife directly affects profoundly important U.S. national interests. Our unwillingness or increasing inability to protect these interests will not only damage us today in Libya, but tomorrow elsewhere in the world.” - John Bolton

http://www.thedaily.com/page/2011/03/14/031411-opinions-oped-libya-bolton-1-2/

“John Bolton, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told a Georgetown University audience Monday that he “would have put troops on the ground” on “day two or three” of the Libyan conflict in order to secure the port and airport in Tripoli and protect U.S. citizens and expatriates from being killed or taken hostage in the strife. Separately, he argued, an earlier no-fly zone “might well have tipped the balance irrevocably against Qaddafi.””

While he does have experience in foreign affairs, the question remains regarding his ties to the financials circle, ability to pull the right strings, and his ability to gain enough funding for the race. He may be a popular choice by the conservatives, but the sad story is that Republican candidates could not ignore the votes of independents and the commerce community and financial circles to defeat Democrat candidates. It would not be surprising to see the financial circles to object for possible policies that could damage US-China ties that could threaten their bussiness with China.

Nope. Cabinet, yes. Head honcho, no. Bolton’s problem is he’s a mile deep and an inch wide, all foreign policy.
