New York Assembly approves same-sex marriage

(CNN) -- New York's state Assembly Wednesday night approved a same-sex marriage bill, sending it to the Senate, where it faces a closer vote.

The Marriage Equality Act passed the Assembly 80-63.

It would grant same-sex couples equal rights to marry "as well as hundreds of rights, benefits and protections that are currently limited to married couples of the opposite sex," according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.

"This is an immense step toward achieving true equality for all here in New York," said Democratic Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, who argued that he and his partner should be allowed to marry.

Wednesday night's debate included discussion of religious, traditions, customs and families. Small gay rights flags decorated many desks in the chamber.

Same-sex marriage is a fundamental human right, said Democratic Assemblyman Richard Gottfried during the debate.

Democratic Assemblyman Micah Kellner also supported the bill, saying, "This is about people's happiness."

Republicans defended their opposition, saying it did not mean they were intolerant.

"It doesn't make me a bigot," said Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin. "It makes me a traditional American."

From the article:

The act would amend the state's Domestic Relations Law to say, among other changes, that "no application for a marriage license shall be denied on the ground that the parties are of the same or a different sex."

Ergo, how will "marriage" be defined as only between TWO people or even two HUMANS.

Because that is the next step.

Heterosexual marriage isn't a "fundamental human right". If it is, I deserve compensation for the years, say from age 21 (personal financial independence) to 42 (engaged to MrsEx) when I was deprived of that right for no good reason.

It amazes me that Gov. Cuomo and the State Legislature have made legalizing gay marriage their top priority, when New York has been suffering from high taxes and losing jobs at a rapid pace.

Talk about misplaced priorities (to put it mildly!).

It’s really only a matter of how fast we totally implode. God will not be mocked.

Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell is Rosie O’Donnell’s brother.

How about that. He’s a homosexual, and she’s a homosexual. And they are siblings. Siblings of different sexes. Heck maybe there is something to the gay gene theory after all.

Why is the government in the business of approving marriages?

Moronic nonsense.

Unfortunately, the level of intellectual acuity this reveals is only too common in America these days.

No. It's not. It's about approving and legalizing perversion. And people's "happiness" isn't governments business.

No it's not a right. Good grief France just voted it down by almost a majority! Doesn't say much for New-Yolkers. Heads are where the sun doesn't shine....um...maybe not such a good choice of words..but accurate.

Transgender and beastiality is just around the corner....we are no longer on a slippery slope...we’re going down to the last count.

Democrates are pushing hard and fast to get it all thru now...be ready cause there’s a whole lot more coming before the election.

You can be certain they see it as governments business. Shall we all determine what would make us "happy" now and rally. How about the entire Congress and Adminisration step down so we can start over again. I'm just sick about this. Sooner than later we'll no longer be free to even think thoughts let alone speak out against this rubbish. Sodom and Gomorrah will rule here.

I worry about what the world will look like when my children are grown...this is just unreal. Wrap sexual deviance in ‘civil rights’ and label everyone against it a bigot. Watch the age of consent drop...the number of partners who can marry increase...incestuous marriages become legal (after all, a grown father and a grown daughter who love each other should have the same rights as gays, right? You can’t control who you love, right? And if neither of them could have children, what could the objection possibly be, except bigotry?). This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Same-sex marriage is a fundamental human right, said Democratic Assemblyman Richard Gottfried during the debate.

Something that cannot exist is not a fundamental human right. Two people of the same sex cannot be joined together as husband and wife. It's not about bigotry or discrimination - it is simply reality - two men cannot be joined as husband and wife, and two women cannot be joined together as husband and wife. You have to have a man and woman for that. Civil Unions are possible for two people of the same sex. I don't know that I would agree with making those a codified institution, but at least the debate would be intellectually honest.

Good grief France just voted it down by almost a majority! Doesn't say much for New-Yolkers.

The VOTERS of New York were not given the opportunity to exercise their franchise on this issue. We in MA were denied that opportunity as well, after the Supreme Judicial Court instituted homosexual 'marriage' by fiat. The panty-waists in the legislature kept putting the referendum off, and when we were within 5 votes of getting it on the ballot, newly elected Gov. Deval Patrick bought off 5 Democrats to 'change their minds'. Sadly, they never suffered any repercussions from their constituents in the next election, because after two years, most folks had just let it go, thinking they couldn't do any more about it, anyway.

IIRC, in every state in which the voters have had a direct say in the matter, marriage has been limited, by law, to one man and one woman.
