Washington (CNSNews.com) - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Congress needs to raise the federal debt limit above its current $14.29 trillion limit regardless of whether spending cuts are made in the federal budget.
At a pen and pad meeting with reporters on Tuesday, Hoyer said, I hope we can reach an agreement [with Republicans] on the fiscal restraints and bringing the [budget] deficit and the [national] debt down -- the debt being long-term, deficits being short-term," said Hoyer. If we cant, I think we need to increase the debt [limit] in any event because America is going [to] pay its bills and I think Americans share that value of fiscal responsibility.
Hoyer said he agrees with House Speaker John Boehner [that] before this month ends, "we need to do something on extending the debt [limit]. If we can do it with deficit and debt reductions at the same time, fine. If we cant, we still have no alternative but to increase the debt limit.

Attention GOP House Members: There is a reason that Hoyer is no longer the MAJORITY Whip...
You go girl!
Way to take the bull by the tail and face the situation!
No it should not. I’ve seen the predictions of what would happen if it is not raised. The government would be legally REQUIRED to live within it’s means.
WHEN DID THAT BECOME A BAD THING?
we still have no alternative but to increase the debt limit.
Obviously Steny you are using the same scenario in your personal budget.
So we should raise the debt ceiling without spending cuts because we pay our bills and value fiscal responsibility???? I'm not even going to try to make sense of that. Orwell would be proud.
I wonder what the odds are that Boehner will cave? I hate to be pessimistic but Boehner simply hasn’t shown any reason to think he’ll hold fast. He and his fellows have an excellent opportunity here to show what their made of. Will they use this situation to their advantage or falter? Once again.
Two words, NO and NO WAY to any raise as a freeze and severe spending/borrowing cuts are needed now.
Hoyer, and the rest of his RAT mob, need to forced to live under the same rules they impose on those of us who make the country work.
Hoyer, you’re an idiot, as is anyone who thinks we should just raise the debt ceiling without addressing the problem that caused the need to do so.
“Value of fiscal responsibility”? Is he effing me?
He and his ilk, in one session of Congress, spent more money than the first 100 sessions combined.
Right, Steny, that’s responsibility.
My God, these people make you want to spit.
I think the dollar would strengthen and our creditors would be happy if instead of voting to increase the debt limit, they would vote to decrease the debt limit by $100B a year for the next ten years. That would increase demand for treasuries and bolster their prices, naturally bringing down interest rates, and spur private capitalism to fill any debt liquidity vacuum. A stronger dollar would benefit the savers and retirees, lessening their reliance on social security.
The Commie Rats deserve spit in their face for arrogant remarks like that.

Hoyer’s an idiot. Always has been.
Most thought it was “National” Prosperity they were talking about. When in reality they were only talking about “Self” Prosperity.
When are the MD voters going to vote this idiot out?
Or is he doing the heavy lifting for Bonehead and Cantor.
the GOP will cave to bunch of Chicken Little bankers, just like they did on TARP
Just look at the other MD reps & senators (e.g., mikulski, cardin, van hollen and so forth). MD voters will NEVER vote these morons out. Never. The growing majority of MD voters are on welfare or on the public dole (government employees). Maryland is THE Freak State.
