Humans Spew More Carbon Dioxide than All of Earth's Volcanoes

Explosive volcanic eruptions might be attention grabbing, but a new review of research finds that their environmental impact pales in comparison to human activities. According to the research, humans put out the same amount of carbon dioxide in three to five days that all of the volcanoes on Earth put out in one year.

"Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions dwarf global volcanic carbon dioxide emissions," study researcher Terrance Gerlach, of the U.S. Geological Survey, said in a statement. Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is the main greenhouse gas responsible for climate change.

Gerlach crunched the carbon dioxide numbers from earlier studies of volcanic output, finding a range of 0.13 to 0.44 billion metric tons, or gigatons, of CO2 per year. In comparison, the estimated rate of human carbon dioxide emissions for 2010 alone is 35 billion metric tons.

For instance, here are a few carbon-emitting human activities and their carbon-dioxide outputs:

Land-use changes: 3.4 gigatons per year

Light-duty vehicles (mainly cars and pickup trucks): 3.0 gigatons per year

Cement production: 1.4 gigatons per year

Present-day human carbon emissions could even exceed the CO2 output of several supervolcano eruptions, including the giant eruption that will eventually occur at Yellowstone National Park, Gerlach wrote in the American Geophysical Union's newsweekly Eos. These mega-eruptions are very rare, with the last one occurring 74,000 years ago in Indonesia.

Frankly, I don't believe this. I just read an article saying that one volcanic eruption spews out more global warming stuff than years of carbon controls will eliminate.

The current volcanic eruption going on in Iceland, since it first started spewing volcanic ash a week ago, has, to this point, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet. Not only that, this single act of God has added emissions to the earth estimated to be 42 times more than can be corrected by the extreme human regulations proposed for annual reductions.

Evidently it summarizes a book by Professor Ian Plimer, a member of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

I suspect that the article posted here was subsidized by one of those special government grants for global warmist liars posing as scientists.

Absolute and incontrovertible BULLSH!T. The human contribution to CO₂ production is less than 4% of the total, and numerous studies have demonstrated this. And CO₂ comprises only 0.38% of the atmosphere to begin with.

The USGS analysts do not include MID OCEAN RIDGES or RIFTS in their computations considering them to be imponderable.

Still, they know they emit CO2 pretty much the same way as volcanos. With the ridges several hundred times larger than the total of all the volcanos on Earth, it's pretty easy to take their 20% volcanic estimation and recompute it to a number that DWARFS human CO2 emissions.
