Actually, it was then-Gen. Shinseki’s (Army Chief of Staff, as I recall, roughly 2001 timeframe) attempt to make the line troops feeeeeeeeeel as elite at the true elites of the Army...Hell, I was there.

On a milblog I frequent someone said that the beret was also in response in female soldiers complaining about what the previous headgear did to their hair. Ever hear that?

Didn’t hear that one, but Shinseki was, and still is, one self-serving POS! I recall when his initial announcement about the black berets was made and marvelled at how utterly STUPID one ki$$-a$$ Army general could possibly be! Unfortunately, this dumba$$ is still hanging around the VA now, making more empty promises and hollow slogans.

yeah, but 95% of the females still don’t know how to wear a beret, and they still complain about “what it does to my haaaaiiiirrr”. part of it has to di with being more concerned about their hair (and really pushing the limit) than with looking like a soldier. If they want to be fashionable, they’re in the wrong place - the military is not (supposed to be) a freaking jobs program,

For that matter, a significant portion of the males don’t know or givadam about how to properly wear or care for the beret...
