Duping American Jews

Middle East: The president last month promised Jewish Americans the U.S. commitment "to the security of Israel is ironclad." Has one of the Democratic Party's most dependable constituencies been conned?

The White House transcript of President Obama's May 22 speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the voice of our country's staunchest defenders of Israel, indicates that the crowd found reasons for approval.

The president, citing two Palestinian politico/terror groups, declared that "the recent agreement between Fatah and Hamas poses an enormous obstacle to peace." After the applause, he added that "No country can be expected to negotiate with a terrorist organization sworn to its destruction."

When the second round of applause had died, he continued, saying the U.S. will keep demanding "that Hamas accept the basic responsibilities of peace, including recognizing Israel's right to exist and rejecting violence and adhering to all existing agreements." A third round of cheers followed.

Would the crowd have been so happy had it known that less than a month later the U.S. would give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an ultimatum to resume talks with the Palestinians based on Israel's pre-1967 borders? Or would it have thought it was being lied to?

Who cares? Will they still support him 90+% in the next election? Yes. End of story.

Obama could appear in a stormtrooper uniform in front of this bunch and he might lose at most 5% of 'em.

Obama is brilliant - Jews will NEVER vote conservative.

It's hard to feel sorry for people who aid the people who would destroy them.

I don't know what to say. I guess it's true, people will always vote for slavery over liberty

Obama is a real piece of work - he combines the utter incompetance of Carter with the inveterate mendacity of Clinton.

A Freeper wrote earlier this about Hitler and the Jews:

“The 1934 election of Hitler as chancellor, was so corrupt that 96% of the inmates at Dachau voted for Hitler. No one knows what happened to the 88 who either did not vote or voted for someone else.”

If true, back then they had no choice. It’s much worse today, as Jews now don’t have to vote for him.

How many 5th generation Minnesotans spend much time fretting about what’s going on in Norway? Wouldn’t we find it bizarre if they did?

Never?
In Britain, they tend to vote Tory. And, lets look at the current Knesset
Kadima 28(left wing splinter of Likud), Likud 27, and Yisrael Beiteinu 15 (Russian right-wing splinter from Likud) are all nationalist free market parties. (Kadima, was anyway. Bunch of whores keep moving left.) That 70 of 120. Then we have the 4 right-wing nationalists and religious nationalists in National Union. There are the 3 members of National Religious Party/Jewish Home, religious Zionists. That is 77 of 120 seats.

That's Britain.

You actually think American Jews will vote conservative? I don't see it. And US history shows it is very, very unlikely that they will.

Of course a few of them will, but I'm talking about the majority.

That's Britain.
You missed Israel. 6 million Jews and one of the most right-wing governments.
American Jews are not homogeneous. Modern Orthodox Jews and those who came from communist countries tend to be Republican. Secular and religious liberal (Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist) Jews descended from the 1880-1923 wave are declining in percentage of the population.

1/2 of American Jews don't much care about Israel.
As for the rest, we remember that 1/3 of Jews were wiped out in living memory. Norway had a fairly gentle occupation. (A Norwegian joked with me that because of Quisling's treason more babies born to German daddies and Norwegian women than Norwegians killed in the war.) And Norwegians don't pray for the restoration of Oslo 3 times a day.

That all said, plenty of Americans pay attention to the "Old Country". And plenty more Americans followed the British royal wedding.

That is not true. Hitler was appointed Chancellor in 1933, not elected. In fact he lost the presidential election in in 1932. In 1934, Hilter’s cabinet passed a law combining the office of president and Chancellor. The 1934 vote was a yes or no vote by the electorate to approve the already passed law.

#1 "Conservative" means something different in other nations.

#2 I'll bet you any amount of money you want that the Jewish vote in 2012 goes Obama.

#3 Since you just want to argue for the sake of arguing, this conversation is over.

Duping only because IBD assumes, as all true conservatives do, that the only thing Jews care about and vote on is Israel. And, of course, that the IBD supported policies are the only option. Not the way to win votes.

That simply proves there are some dumb ass Freepers, I'll give you that. I seriously doubt prisoners at Dachau voted. If they did, consider that while there were certainly some Jews at Dachau in 1934, they were somewhere between 3/4% and 1% of the population after all, Dachau was a camp for political prisoners. Though Jews were persecuted at the time, the idea of rounding them up was still in the future. And personally, I don't believe exit polls were done in 1930s Germany, much less in concentration camps. I suspect that whoever told you that made it up, for what reason I don't know.

True. In Israel, it is more nationalist than in America. However, the Likud governments under Netanyahu have not just reduced government growth, they have reduced the size of its government and privatized entire sectors.

#2 I'll bet you any amount of money you want that the Jewish vote in 2012 goes Obama.
Probably. But I suspect it will be a lot lower.

#3 Since you just want to argue for the sake of arguing, this conversation is over.
I don't like people over simplifying or incorrectly making statements about Jews. I suppose I can be pugnacious.
