Bachmann Favors National Sales Tax
NewsMax ^ | 6/13/2011 | Martin Gould

Prospective presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says she wants a national sales tax, but can’t vote for it because she believes Congress would just add it to the current income tax system.

In a profile in The Wall Street Journal, Bachmann says she loves the FAIR tax proposal but just cannot bring herself to back it in the House.

“If we were starting over from scratch, I would favor a national sales tax," the three-term Minnesota congresswoman says. But the reality is that if it were enacted, the chances are “we would end up with a dual tax, a national sales tax and an income tax."

Bachmann says her tax plan would be to take corporate rates down from 35 percent to nine percent and “zero out” capital gains tax, the alternative minimum tax and the death tax.

But she says the main problem with the U.S. tax system is that nearly half the population pays nothing. She says all deductions should be abolished “because there is no tie to the government benefits that people demand.

“Everyone should have to pay something," she insists.

What, unable to defend the shallow legislative history of Mrs Bachmann without bringing in others?

I think a tax attorney saying she will abolish the IRS is a good thing. At the very least the IRS will be downsized.

My dream would be Bachmann/West with Palin as energy secretary drill baby drill.

As far as abolishing all big gov. like I like in Ron Paul it ain't never gonna happen. Even my dream scenario of Bachmann/West with Palin Energy Sec won't either but it is a better HOPE than Romney or Obama.

She says all deductions should be abolished “because there is no tie to the government benefits that people demand.

I don't get this. Is she really saying she wants to abolish all deductions? Mortgage interest deduction? Medical deduction? I've had the impression that most tax filers who are taking deductions are usually the ones who are paying taxes, as opposed to the non-filers and those who pay no income taxes.

Too many speak without indepth knowledge of the FairTax. It has been introduced as HR 25 in the house... Bachmann did not support it...

What do you mean by she did not support it? Has the House voted on this and Bachamnn voted against it? Or just that she's not a co-sponsor of the legislation?

I know that, dipstick. Mrs. No Legislative Accomplishments said she couldn't support it because seniors didn't understand it.

What about that do you not understand.

The final law MUST repeal the 16th amendment... else we will be worse off. HR25 says...

1/5/2011—Introduced.
Fair Tax Act of 2011 - Repeals the income tax, employment tax, and estate and gift tax. Redesignates the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as the Internal Revenue Code of 2011. Imposes a national sales tax on the use or consumption in the United States of taxable property or services.

The current 47% that pay no taxes now, would DEMAND a "poverty subsidy" and get it just as they do now....We'd end up in the same boat..The same small majority (53%) of “Tax Payers” would be carrying the huge minority of the “Poor”.....The entitlement mentality would have to be addressed first, and with all 47% voting in their “own best interest” that's a pretty big voting block to overcome

I have a solution to that in post 31 (and it may be the only real solution)It would be a greater battle than any of the other proposed methods here though. However, it would defang the SEIU and the Government Check pimps and decapitate the special interests more effectively than anything else.

That is the biggest post of pure baloney. There are a select few that make everything about themselves, but that would not be Michele Bachmann.

LMAO I remember now seeing your screen name are you a Palin supporter calling Bachmann’s briefed (it was from a blog) bio; paper thin?

At least Bachmann is debating tonight.Palin better crap or get of the pot if she is going to run as an Indy- announce already. She has missed two debates. She has ZERO approval from fiscal conservatives or independents she should step up and debate. The media hates her and she is fighting with Bachmann but she has something to show more so than Bachmann or anyone else policy and experience wise, like it or not.

I think in the end even the; ‘I will write is Palin’s name even if she does not run’ crowd, and the Bachmann, Cain supporters will be disappointed as Perry has some TX business to do before he can make it official and after Romney fudges tonight Perry will win the nomination.

Whenever I hear a Fair Tax discussion, however, I hear “Prebates” and other such things. This is why I prefer a flat tax, personally.

What other such things ? A flat tax is still an invasive, intrusive, personal income tax.

With a flat tax, Big Bro still probes your personal life (job, wages, side income, etc) and decides exactly how much $ you "deserve" to keep.

I favor the Fair Tax. The Prebate is a tool to keep the class warfare whining to a minimum, but requires Big Bro to mail a monthly prebate check to everyone's current address.

Opportunity for fraud and theft is still rampant with that, so I favor a Fair Tax (National Retail Sales Tax) under 10%, with NO prebates.

Yes I know 10% sales tax supposedly won't come close to bringing in "enough" revenue for Big Bro.

Tough. Shrink the government. Let 80 - 90% of the federal gov't be dedicated to national defense like it should be. Forget Prebates. Just let the poor pay federal tax on all their retail purchases, just like everyone else.

Maybe it would help them feel more "equal" and stop whining about their victim status.
