6 Driving Tactics to Save Gas This Summer

Avoid Ethanol When Possible

Gasoline that has been cut with 10 or 15 percent ethanol, called E10 or E15, is an mpg killer. Why? Gasoline stores more energy than ethanol (119,000 Btu per gallon vs 80,000). So it takes more ethanol than gasoline to go the same distance.

That tip is the very last in the article. Imagine that, corn belongs on the grill rather than in your SUV.

This link has list of ethanol-free stations for the US and Canada:

Ethanol also really fouls up outboard engines.

We can buy ethanol-free gas here in Oregon, but not supposed to use it in modern cars. Not sure what the fine would be if one got caught.
My chainsaw really appreciates the ethanol-free version.

Ethanol belongs in a bottle of beer in my refrigerator, not in my gas tank.

I try to avoid the gas stations that advertise that their gasoline is “enriched” with ethanol. “Diluted” is actually the more accurate term.

Nice link, but not really an option here in Pennsylvania. We have four such stations in the entire state.

If this option is important to you, best move to one of the Rocky Mountain states.

Even the corn belt states have way more options. So evidently, they can push this crap on the rest of us, but they don't have to live so much with the results.

Unfortunately, the nearest ethanol-free gas station is 50 miles from me.

Tactic 6 makes no sense to me at all especially without a clarification on whether its a stick or not.

Pushing my clutch down is the same as throwing it in neutral and I can't accept in my simple mind that not pressing on the clutch while coasting downhill is worse than letting the engine power the descent.

why does ethanol free gasoline typically only show up in high octane gas?

I get 3 more miles per gallon running non-ethanol gas in my truck full time.

I’ve calculated that I’m saving $700 per year using non-ethanol with the increased mileage (even counting the more expensive non-ethanol gas price using 30,000 miles per year).

If you think about it, there might be 150 million actual drivers in the US driving 15,000 miles per year, and if every driver is buying $300 more gas than they should be (because of the decreased mileage running ethanol), then that would mean we are collectively paying $45 billion more on gas per year than before ethanol was mandated.

We are wasting billions of dollars on decreased gas mileage.

This is what is happening with ethanol free stations.
I go to a company here in Memphis to get ethanol free gas regularly. They have trouble with their pump at times working because it is old. I called ahead to see if it was working and the lady said I would have to register before she could turn it on. The GOVERNMENT is making them register everyone that is purchasing it and they have to account for every drop!!!

left out some simple items

#1 strip out as much weight as possible.
Extra stuff in trunk? Extra seats not used (some are removable)
#2 don’t fill up unless you will use all of the gas in that trip. One gal of gas weighs 6 lbs, it takes gas to haul all of that gas around.

With your foot fully off the pedal the ECU is in idle mode. It will automatically adjust fuel in order to try to maintain a constant engine speed. If the engine is over idle speed in this mode, it will reduce fuel all the way to zero if the speed is high enough.

If you’re coasting down a hill with the wheels driving the engine speed to above idle speed, most likely the injectors are completely shut off. If you step on the clutch or pop it into neutral, the wheels no longer give this assist, and the injectors need to open some in order to overcome engine friction and inertia.
