Old-time religion, today's politics [cultivating "sinister right-wing culture warriors"]
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 13, 2011 | Tim Rutten

Posted on 06/13/2011 5:53:37 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

The sentiments expressed by John F. Kennedy in his famous 1960 speech on religion and politics are being swept away by Republican presidential contenders.

[snip]

"I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute;...... I believe in a president whose views on religion are his own private affair, neither imposed upon him by the nation, nor imposed by the nation upon him as a condition to holding that office."

If, as seems increasingly likely, Texas Gov. Rick Perry jumps into the current race for the Republican presidential nomination, Houston also will be the scene of a campaign event that demonstrates just how far we've descended from that day Kennedy spoke, and what the consequences of that descent are. Perry has summoned the country's governors to join him on Aug. 6 in a national day of prayer and fasting sponsored by a fundamentalist, evangelical Protestant ministry. Perry, who urges participants to bring a Bible, acknowledges that the event, which is called The Response, is an overtly Christian occasion, and on its website, he writes that America's hope "lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees."

In a written statement, Perry argues: "Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel."

When it comes to allies, Perry isn't a bit shy about cultivating some of the more sinister right-wing culture warriors.....

Perry is hardly the only GOP candidate to troll for votes in these murky waters....

Sarah Palin, who has written that Kennedy was wrong in his speech, and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) both play up their evangelical connections. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum wears his conservative Catholicism so prominently on his sleeve that you'd think he was running for archbishop.

Gotta love distraught liberals' hyperbolic hysteria.

Of course Christians and Jews must be muzzled while the administration reaches out to Muslims.

Here's a clip and a link re LA anti-abortion rally yesterday in LA.

Yahoo - June 12, 2011: Texas' Perry assails Obama on abortion at LA stop [excerpt] Perry also faulted Obama for reversing the so-called "Mexico City policy" that banned giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide information about abortions. Obama struck down the policy during his first week in office, saying it was too broad and undermined family planning in developing countries.

Under Obama "our federal tax dollars can now be used to fund abortion all over the world. With the stroke of a pen, abortion essentially became a U.S. foreign export," Perry said.

[snip]

California Assemblyman Dan Logue, a Republican, has been urging Perry to enter the race and is behind a draft-Perry website. "We like to see him do what he's doing for Texas for the country," Logue said.

Several people in the crowd said they were mostly unaware of Perry but were willing to consider his candidacy, especially given his outspoken opposition to abortion.

"I look for any leader who has strong moral fiber," said Ricardo Brambila, 37, a paper company sales manager from Orange. A Democrat, Brambila said he's uncomfortable with Obama's direction on abortion and stem cells.

Perry is pushing tougher immigration laws in Texas. Brambila said he supports a secure border "but you can't step on people's rights once they are here."

Jose Rodas, 42, who manufactures signs in Los Angeles, said he knew only that Perry opposed abortion. "He has good principles," he added. [end excerpt]

“Old time religion” ??!!

WTF ??!!!

Christianism (and judeo-christianism...) has more than 2000 years and it’s a GOOD OLD TIME RELIGION !
Kennedy probably thought that Jesus Christ was a liberal moron . I don’t know why he was crucified...

Only liberal nuts believe that everything considered as new is good and the opposite for what is considered as “old”.

The liberal way of thinking is poor and pathetic . It fits with amnesic brainwashed nuts

Of course, the LA Times could not put that speech into context.

In 1960, LFK stood to be the first Roman Catholic president of the US. Many were afraid that he would take his orders from Rome. THAT is the reason he made that statement.

August 6 is no day for a fast. It is Transfiguration Day, for [New Calendar] Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics, among others.

We celebrate Divine Liturgy, bless (and eat) grapes, and eat fish.

Its best to honor Holy Transfiguration, and to pick another day for a fast. (The first two weeks of August are the Dormition Fast, so most days other than Transfiguration we [New Calendar] Orthodox will be abstaining already.)

However, the obamaite and liberal “separation of church and state” advocates are hypocrites, since they exalt islam and put radical muslim fifth columnists in the White House and other high places!!!!

"I believe in a president whose views on religion are his own private affair,"

This attitude shows a complete ignorance of what religion, or at least Christian faith, is all about. If one is regenerated and indwelt by the Holy Spirit then their faith will inform every single aspect of their life, every second of every day.

America sure is a different place than it was in 1960. Then, Protestants were suspicious of Catholics in high places. (The irony is that Kennedy wasn’t very serious about his Catholicism. That was the message of his speech.) Now, the official atheist religion is suspicious of anyone who names the name of Jesus Christ (except for their own who take on a form of Christianity for purposes of respectability).

The Left has to destroy moral underpinnings and the family unit in order for the State to assume total control.

I have a problem understanding that there is no place that can be found that states that there must be a separation of church & state. The way I understand it, is only that the government cannot create any religion.

Can anyone explain this more clearly, in order to understand if the 'church & state' being bandied around is really not true. If it is true, where can the information be located?

“sinister right-wing culture warriors” What does that mean?

It means that nobody at the LA Times understands the Latin etymology of sinister.
