NoCmpromiz, many thanks for that. After Persevero’s comment, I went and skimmed through Paul's works and couldn't find an overt reference to support my prior comment. I even asked my wife and she said she wasn't aware of any explicit reference.
I do believe this was what came to mind earlier, as a synthesis from two books concerning one church.

I dont think its quite the situation of a whole church selling its possessions I agree, it was not the whole church, just enough within the body to cause a problem. (Isn't that always the case?)
The only related item I can think of is not in Biblical times, but in the 1800's when William Miller set a date for the return and followers of his teaching did just that. When his prophetic musings failed to materalize his followers suffered The Great Disappointment.
