On his 90th birthday, the Queen has honoured her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, with the title of the Lord High Admiral of the Navy - a role that, until now, was hers.
The office of the Lord High Admiral dates from the 14th century and has been held by the Queen since 1964.
She has now handed it over to her husband as he celebrates his milestone age and in recognition of the fact that he gave up his promising naval career to devote his life to royal duty and support his wife in her role as Sovereign.

Mr. Betty Windsor.
Does Phil work?
At 90 and married to a welfare queen, what was his job before he retired?
What does his wife do while she is at work?
Do you have any evidence that the Royalist Sycophants who travel to Merry Ol’ England, do so to see Phil?
Rarely check out posts about the UK in this forum...so many uninformed posts.
He carries out dozens of official duties on behalf of the British government every year - and he has continued to do that into his eighties. In addition to this he is involved in the running of a significant number of charities and other organisations.

First of all, educate yourself about the finances of the Royal Family. It is a very wealthy family with a considerable of private wealth. It voluntarily gives the vast majority of this wealth - on the order of 200 million pounds a year, generated by property worth over a billion pounds - to the British state. In exchange for this, the British government funds its official activities and expenses at a cost of less than twenty million pounds - in other words, the Royal Family gives the British taxpayer about ten times as much money each year as it received in return.
But to answer your question about the prince, he was a professional Naval officer during the Second World War, and after it until the Queen ascended the throne. He served with distinction during the war, and ultimately rose to the rank of Commander in the RN as a serving officer.

A great deal. Her duties require her to be informed about every single aspect of British government and hours every day are spent on that task. In addition, she also carries out hundreds of official duties a year on behalf of her government.

Some do. But that's largely irrelevant. What he does is his duty under the constitutional conventions of the United Kingdom. Duties he is expected to discharge by the government and the people of the United Kingdom.
He is neither a Nazi, not a eugenicist. He fought the Nazis for five years, so that accusation is particularly offensive.
Yes, he has said that if reincarnation existed, he’d like to come back as a virus, and I can understand why that offends somebody, but it has nothing to do with eugenics. It’s an position to do with overpopulation - that the world will reach a stage where there are so many humans we can’t support ourselves.
Really? And what would those parallels be?
Did Barack Obama graduate at the top of his naval class?
Did Obama fight at the Battle of Crete?
Was Obama mentioned in despatches for his actions during the Battle of Cape Matapan?
As second in command of HMS Wallace, using great ingenuity, did Obama help save his ship from a night bomber attack during the invasion of Sicily in 1943?
What about something more humble? Perhaps Obama stoked the boilers of a troop transport ship?
Hey, as Obama served in a war at all?
Perhaps, Obama was an instructor at a Petty Officer’s School?
Okay, perhaps it is the community organizer thing? Obama was a community organizer, while Prince Philip founded the world famous Duke of Edinburgh Award, which has inspired young people for close to fifty years. Maybe it’s that you are thinking of?
Prince Philip is patron of over 800 charities, has written a rulebook for a sport, and his personal motto is ‘God Is My Help’.
I’m struggling here.....help me out.
Exactly how are the careers of President Obama and the World War II veteran Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, alike?
That simply isn’t fair. To accuse a man who fought against the Nazis as being a ‘Nazi sympathiser’ is crass and classless.
UNLESS of course, your post referred to HMS Pinafore’s ‘Ruler of the Queen’s Navy’ and not to the current Lord High Admiral.
If that is the case Verginius Rufus you have my unreserved apologies, and my post can stand, not as a reply to you, (hey, anyone familiar with the work of Gilbert and Sullivan deserves a respectful tip of the hat, if anything) but as a riposte to those on the thread who are, with little or no basis in fact, attacking a man’s career and reputation.
Mr Obama said: I had breakfast with the Prime Minister, meetings with the Chinese, the Russians, David Cameron...
Prince Philip replied: Can you tell the difference between them?”

I didn’t intend to be obscure—I was comparing the character in the Gilbert & Sullivan song to BHO. There are remarkably few similarities between Prince Philip and Obama, other than the most banal ones (they’re both males, speak English, are married, etc.).
