Alabama governor signs nation's toughest immigration law

Republican Governor Robert Bentley on Thursday signed into law a crackdown on illegal immigration in Alabama that both supporters and critics consider the toughest in the nation.

Under the new measure, police must detain someone they suspect of being in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proper documentation when stopped for any reason.

It also will be a crime to knowingly transport or harbor someone who is in the country illegally. The law imposes penalties on businesses that knowingly employ someone without legal resident status. A company's business license could be suspended or revoked.

The law requires Alabama businesses to use a database called E-Verify to confirm the immigration status of new employees.

"We have a real problem with illegal immigration in this country," Bentley said after signing the law. "I campaigned for the toughest immigration laws and I'm proud of the Legislature for working tirelessly to create the strongest immigration bill in the country."

You must not go to many sites then. I have seen posts made by bama fans that leave my mouth open at the absolute hatred shown by bama fans for AU fans. It happens in real life too. I am going with a man who played football at AU. On many occasions I have seen bama fans come up to him and tell him to take off his AU cap or whatever. These are complete strangers. Where do they get the nerve to tell someone else they can not support his team? When I moved to AL in 66, the bama fans were not like that but over the years they have become the most obnoxious fans of any team I have ever been around. I grew up in MS and the MSU/OM fans were not that way.

I am a transplant as well...came from Tennessee. But let’s consider a “somewhat” more neutral observet.

Before the season last year the Atlanta Journal conducted a “Most Obnoxious SEC Fan Poll....Auburn took 1st place and here is what the sports writer had to add:

Because they’ve grown as arrogant as Alabama backers without one-tenth the justification. Because they’re still whining over the national championship they didn’t win in 2004. Because the world’s worst fan — the Montgomery banker Bobby Lowder — is an Auburn man. And because I would pay money (though not a lot) to see Bobby Lowder in jean shorts.

Another poll says the worst fans are: GA, SC, FL, LSU, AL, The bottom 2 are from MSU and Vandy. You can find a poll to say what you want to say! I have only been around SC fans at the Atlanta game, but the ones we were around were just as nice as they could be. I can not say the same about the OR fans in Phoenix. Even the kids were obnoxious. I hope MSU, AU, and SC have good teams this fall. The rest could lose every game and it would not bother me!! I don't understand why your poll said AU fans worship Dye when Bama fans really worship a dead coach. I have been around a lot of AU fans and not a one worships Dye.

Elections have consequences, sometimes very good ones. This is the fruit of AL flipping its legislature from Dem to Pub for the first time since Reconstruction and electing a solid conservative Republican governor on top of it.
