My uncle was in Wisconsin recently and managed to dig up some of my grandfather's immigration papers. He came to America by way of St Johns Canada and entered at Detroit then worked his way across Michigan and into Wisconsin.
The upper midwest to have attracted the bulk of the Germanic immigrants along with a fair number of Welsh and Irish. I was recently reading that something like 60% of midwestern farms are still owned by people of German decent.
