Romney to Tea Party movement: No third party bids!
CNN ^ | 03/9/2010 | By: CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby

Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney has a message to Tea Party candidates nationwide: If you lose your Republican primary bids, stay on the sidelines.

The former Massachusetts governor on Monday warned the grassroots movement not to mount third party efforts in general elections, which he said would siphon votes from Republican nominees.

"If there is a conservative candidate that runs in the general election, then obviously, divide and fail is the result," Romney said in an interview with the conservative Web site Newsmax. "Hopefully Tea Party candidates will run in respective primaries and they will either win or lose. And if they win, they will go into the general. If they lose, they won't, and they will get behind the more conservative of the two finalists."

Romney explained that "dividing our conservative effort in the general elections" would "basically hand the country to Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and that would be very sad indeed."

Hey Jim you sound like Paul Revere warning Republicans. [;-). If you vote for someone you don't agree with, you will be wasting your vote.

I suspect that those who initially opposed Bush and then backed him in the general election, and then opposed McCain and said they would never back him but ended up backing him in the general election will end up backing Romney if he wins the Republican nomination.

I support Bush both initially and in the general election. Any opposition i had came after his second election when he moved to the left.

As for McCain, I did ultimately give him my vote, but not my support. But, McCain was only a RINO. Romney is a flat out liberal and is as much the antithesis of conservative values as is Obama.

Both are big government statists who think it is their job to rule as opposed to govern.

If Romney gets the nomination I will not vote for him.

I’m glad to hear Romney is not going to run as a third party candidate. He could have been a spoiler.

Maybe another poster has already pointed this out -- I haven't read all the posts on this thread yet -- but what do you mean? Aren't you aware that Mitt is the great Waffler? Why wouldn't he go back on this? (It's in his blood)

Only slightly off topic, I've listened to radio talkshow host Jerry Doyle for a few years. He's always proclaimed himself to be an independent conservative. Lately he's been bashing Sarah Palin quite a bit, and saying that he thinks Romney's a great candidate. Yesterday, in talking about Romney's formal announcement, Doyle was pissed off that Romney was "sucking up to anti-abortion freaks" and "anti-gay marriage freaks." This guy has about 150 station affiliates and typically shares whatever channel most of our conservative talkers can be found on. I couldn't believe what I was hearing...anti-abortion freaks? I called the station manager to complain, and I can only hope that a lot of other listeners do too - in addition, of course, to turning off the program.

I do not understand your question but my philosophy does not change. We fight for the most conservative candidate we can get in the primary but after that, it's too late, we vote for the Republican candidate if we want to stop the destructive nature of today's Democrats.

I despise liberalism and we must stop it in any way we can, even if it's incrementally and in baby steps.

No he’as not. He’s far worse. He’s the author and impetus of ObamaCare for starters. If a Republican governor (Romney) could do it in Massachusetts, then WE (Obama and the socialist democrats) can implement OUR health care package for all of America!

He empowers the left’s socialist agenda!!

To hell with Romney!!

No Romney! Not now, not tomorrow, not ever!!

Rebellion is brewing!!

I know. I think I said ‘tepid, at best’.
I have had a lot of arguments with the establishment guys in my state about this very issue. They think the Tea Party folks won’t work the campaigns. I say, “why should they if they feel like the establishment candidate is wrong for the country?” So far, I don’t think I’ve made much an impact - tho I keep trying.

Romney is not a fighter

hes a coward wimp

He would roll over for the Democrats the 1st day

Remember the excuse about RomneyCare, same sex marriage liberal judges etc ???

“Oh Mitty HAD TO govern that way. MASs was liberal”

Well right now the Senate is in the hands of the liberal Democrats

Wee Willy Mitty would have to sign all their liberal bills right ???

Mitty has a bright yellow streak down his back

he would fight the Conservatives in the House and Senate and play patsy with Reid and Pelosi

Can you imagine his cabinet ???

I’m not worried about any of this B/S, because the Fox News Candidate is not going to get nominated, Palin is.

The very day that Palin announces, she’s going to suck all of the oxygen out of the room.

Obama hasn’t been my leader, neither will Romney.

"we vote for the Republican candidate if we want to stop the destructive nature of today's Democrats."

Maybe. If Obama is elected, conservatives will fight him. If Romney is elected, we will boil slowly and not be able to do anything about it.

“No hes not”

No he is not. In some ways a Romney win would be worse. He would be the traitor within the gates, rather than the enemy at the gates. The sly traitor can effect far more damage within than can the bumbling aggressor who is a declared enemy. To hell with both of them, and anyone who would support either, at any stage of the ongoing collapse.

Obama is worse than Romney. At lease we have a fighting chance with Romney where we know exactly what Obama is trying to do to the country.

Tell us: If you had to vote for a successful "clinic" businessman who was also an abortionist, and he was running vs. an out-n-out socialist, would you vote for the businessman-abortionist?

You are aware, aren't you, that as late as the first week of December, 2007...Romney was telling parents of embryos that they could either given them up for adoption OR "research" (destruction). Here, the man who supposedly converted to "pro-life" based upon a "revelation" of what stem cell research was all about in Nov. 2004...was less than 37 months later touting "pro-choice" theology in a Katie Couric interview??!!!

BayStateMitt'care' [2006] expanded taxpayer-funded abortions in that state and left the wolves (Planned Parenthood) to watch the henhouse as a PERMANENT member of the oversight board of Mitt'care.'

I'm not sure why supposed 'pro-lifers' would vote for people who pushed abortion in EVERY year they've been gunnin' (or in) for office thru '07 -- and for 24 years prior to running for office as well!

"my philosophy does not change. We fight for the most conservative candidate we can get in the primary but after that, it's too late, we vote for the Republican candidate if we want to stop the destructive nature of today's Democrats."

In 2010 we saw the GOP establishment come out AGAINST the republican primary winners.

In Delaware we saw the establishment come out fighting against the Republican that won the Senate nomination. In Alaska we saw the same thing, other freepers may know of other races where winning the Republican primary did not guarantee the GOP establishment support, or even their neutrality.

Those were two Senate races where the establishment did to the republican nominee what we are saying that we must do against the hard left, anti-conservative, incompetent, Mitt Romney. It is also what the establishment GOP is doing to Vice Presidential candidate Palin, attempting to destroy her career, and her influence within the GOP.

Grandma:

You are soon going to have to decide if you are a conservative or a Republican, because a Romney nomination will split the party wide open and RINOS are the Whigs of 1850.

However, if Romney is the Republican nominee that’s a signal, to me at least, that the Repubs have a death wish and need to be replaced.

It could be the 19th century all over again. The GOP rising then on the ashes of the Whigs.

The GOP could be the new Whigs of extinction.
