>>I am guessing we are denying ourselves as much or more than we are denying them by putting them out of their pain with a shot of too much medicine. But who am I to say?<<
Who is anyone to say? My mom’s last words to the doctors were to let her go.
As I said, no matter how much we frame this as a “life” issue it is in the final analysis a single soul issue. We can’t change that with any amount of legislation nor prayer.
We are all custodians of our individual lives.
Oooh, burn!
“But my main opposition does come from the slippery slope assisted suicide creates. How long will it be before i cant stand the pain turns into I cant stand him, he is a pain?”
Exactly. I am actually rather sympathetic to the argument that everyone should make their own decisions about end of life issues. HOWEVER, if we make assisted suicide too easy, it then is just a tiny little step to family etc. pressuring old/incapacitated/annoying patients to “Oh, just go ahead and go, already!” Nobody needs that kind of thought in their mind. I can’t think of any way to make suicide options available without making them far TOO available. Therefore, I’m against assisted suicide as something that should be available at the corner drugstore.
