Watched a documentary on Huey Long. Huey was smart, as smart as or smarter than Newt. But when he went to Washington, he did had this “stemwinder” style that appealed to farmers. (Lincoln had the same style, so he did not give speeches like Roland Massey did in the film “Abe Lincoln in Illinois.” but flung his arms around and moved his feet. Toward the end, as he started seriously about running for President. He stopped all that, and began speaking to the newsreal cameras in a calmer way. Even his speaking style was a lot less “country.” The FDR people were scared to death of him. If Long had not been killed in September. 1935, he would have been running for Presient in 1936, and FDR was by no means a shoe-in, because the Depression was still going.

Ah, Huey . . .

My maiden name was Long. I had fun in Louisiana -- even though I said "no relation," nobody believed me.
