Which I agree with - in the sense that if I'm a politician and my kid makes public statements politically supporting me - well, then the press can start to cover them as they would a pundit or politician. And if the press starts hounding my kid, how can I then want the press to "leave my kid alone" ?

IOWs a politician's children aren't actual children. If a ten year old politician's child opens his or her mouth he or she is then equivalent to an adult pundit or politician. Interesting fantasy.

I don’t think it’s a fantasy, more like a sad truth. Look at what Meghan McCain says, and the coverage she receives, and our opinions on what she says. Before she wanted to say anything, it was “And here’s John McCain’s wife, Cindy, and his family...”

Now it’s “The latest thing Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain has said...”
