Palin dismisses Geithner on debt ceiling
Washington Post ^ | Thursday June 2, 2011 | Dan Balz and Philip Rucker

SEABROOK, N.H. — Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R) teed off on Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner on Thursday night, saying she does not believe his “false statements” that a “catastrophe would befall” the country if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling by August.

On her first day in New Hampshire, Palin held an impromptu news conference as she was leaving a clambake here. She encouraged congressional Republicans to hold firm in the debt-ceiling negotiations, and she said the cost of the war in Afghanistan and the posture of the Afghan government should prompt consideration of a drawdown of U.S. forces there.

Geithner, she said, has “given us now four different due dates where catastrophe would befall us if the debt ceiling is not raised. … Well, once bitten, twice shy. How many more times are we going to have to hear this date change?” Of the August deadline Geithner says is the absolute cutoff for congressional action, she said, “I don’t believe it.”

She urged Republican leaders in Congress not to give in to the Obama administration’s demands, saying it would be “a failure of leadership” to yield at this point.

Her comments on Afghanistan added to growing doubts about an extended stay for U.S. forces. Palin said it is time to reevaluate the U.S. mission there.

If you are trying to curtail your spending, why apply for more credit? The answer should be no more credit, and pay off the debt.

People who are serious about cutting spending actually cut spending.
People who are not serious about cutting spending arrange for loans so that they can go wild and party.

I know where the Democrats are on this.
I'm afraid I know where the Republican establishment is as well.

Question to Palin-skeptics: Be honest--which other candidate speaks with this kind of honesty and clarity.

And how many of this years 12 appropriation bills of discretionary spending could be cut to size right now? August is 2 months away, and that’s 61 days to cut the budget. And don’t raise the debt ceiling, that would proceed running up more debt, duh.

What amazes me is how all of a sudden the media is paying attention to her policy positions and reporting on them. It’s almmost like they’re forced to with the intermittent contact they have on the bus tour and the competition for her time.

She can’t be that smart, can she? Nahhh... /s

If we don't increase our line of credit then we will have to cut spending.

Dimocrats don't know how to do that so their political lives depend upon extending our credit more.

That comes before the health of our country's finances for them.

“catastrophe would befall”

Can we default without raising the debt limit? Sure, if Geithner actively chooses to.

“if Geithner actively chooses to. “

Correct.

Timmy is not making predictions, but rather threats.

Neither do I.

I agree with her on both counts.

Absolutely. Governor Palin says a lot of things that I can't disagree with. Guess that means I'm stupid too. :-)

She sounds firmer this time than she did when Geithner’s puppetmeister Paulsen forced TARP on the Congress with similar lies of urgency

A “catastrophe” huh. What does he call the current climate. Obama and Turbo Tax need to get the hell out of here. His Marxist utopia is on fire. Forclosures are unprecedented and their next plan is to over-run the border with illegals. Go to hell Timmy.

Agree with plenty of what she said - Though she is wrong on Astan - We do not need more people CONUS in positions of influence suggesting we are going to cut and run. The Karzai Gov't is not who that will play to. It plays to those out on the front lines deciding whether to support us or not. Whether to give us HUMINT or are they going to hang in 3,6, 12 months because of it......Which the Taliban Propaganda is feeding them ever since Obama came into office.

Astan was always going to be a long process. Not an easy one. Just as GWB saw Iraq through, with leadership and resolve....that is what we need in Astan. It will be worth it in the end, if we can do it. If we don't, we'll pay down the road again...

Sarah is playing to domestic polls here and to cut at the CinC. While Obama deserves some cutting on, our warriors down range don't and when one cuts on the CinC (in that role) it is often the warriors down range that pay the price (not the sitting CinC).
