PLACERVILLE -- Phillip and Nancy Garrido were sentenced to virtual life terms in prison Thursday morning shortly after Jaycee Dugard exhorted the pair through her mother, capping a whirlwind of a case that captured hearts and imaginations worldwide after Dugard surfaced and revealed she spent two decades as the prisoner of a twisted sexual bondage and captivity scheme outside Antioch.
Phillip Garrido, 60, received a sentence of 431 years to life in prison, while Nancy Garrido, 55, was sentenced to 36 years to life in prison, all in accordance with their guilty pleas last month in a El Dorado County courtroom, which encompasses the South Lake Tahoe neighborhood where she was kidnapped in 1991.
At the sentencing, Dugard's mother Terry Probyn spoke and read a statement written by Dugard herself. The victim had issued brief statements before, but Probyn read what is easily the longest and most expressive commentary by Dugard to date:
"I chose not to be here today because I refuse to waste another second of my life in your presence. Phillip Garrido you are wrong. I can never say that to you before. You are a liar and all of your so-called theories are wrong.
"Nancy, to facilitate his behavior ... is evil," Probyn continued, reading her daughter's statement. "Phillip, I hated every second of every day of 18 years because of you. You stole my life and that of my family ... I hope you have as many sleepless night as I did. Thankfully, I am doing well now and am no longer living in a nightmare. You do not matter any more."
As her statement was read, Nancy Garrido sobbed to herself as she sat in her orange jumpsuit, while Phillip Garrido looked down and sat stoicly.

I read this article, It’s so sad. This girl lost her life, raising her kids knowing they’re the spawn of this evil guy. It’s beyond comprehension. God Bless her and her 20 mil she got. It’s deserved. After all this parole mess that happened.

Um, did the fact that her children are also the monster’s children get lost somewhere? I’m sure Jaycee loves her children, but, I’m equally sure she would have rather not have given birth to children created by that slug.

OK, looked the dude up. In 1977 he started serving a 50 year federal sentence...and was paroled after 11 years. WHY?! If he had been kept in jail, this whole thing would never have happened. Incredible.

They’re both evil. But somehow I hold the wife in more contempt for going along with it. For some reason the women that attatch themselves to evil men (ala mob wives or dictator wives) bother me more than the monsters they end up with. I’m not sure if that makes sense but I had to get it off my chest and see if anyone shared that viewpoint or if I’m just nuts.
What’s really mind blowing is his wife delivered those kids. WTF is appropriate here. What a truly warped mindset. I’m looking forward to reading her book.
