Millions hit the road to be with family and friends for barbecues and other outdoor activities on Memorial Day weekend. It’s no coincidence that police around the country were staked out on the side of the road in anticipation. That’s because the federal government encourages states to shake down travelers who pose no threat to others.

Although they aren't mentioned, many states have also staged East German style 'safety' checkpoints to confirm - wait for it - seat belt and infant seat use. Many of us can recall seat belt laws first being proposed with the promise that they wouldn't become primary violations (i.e. you can be stopped/ticketed for that reason alone). Like all promises from statists, it was a lie. Now the police will gladly wipe their feet on the 4th Amendment as they impede your right to travel.
Also left out are the crimes committed while the police are out collecting revenue. Memorial Day weekend featured riots in various cities. One authority figure admitted the state police were unprepared to respond. Could it be that they were engaged in other activities (funded by Uncle Sam) at the time?
Despite most FReepers' healthy skepticism of government and its machinations there are many who seem to believe that black-on-white speed limit signs were placed by a divine hand rather than by bureaucrats who intentionally ignore the recommendations of traffic engineers.
I can beat that one. On Memorial day weekend I got pulled over and fined for not wearing a seatbelt. I was only 1/4 mile from my neighborhood which was in view.
The police office who was a nice young lady told me she hates Seatbelt Awareness month where she is assigned to stake out middle class low crime residential neighborhoods to trap law-biding citizens to issue them $25 fines with no points for not wearing seatbelts. You can bet she didnt see that on those police shows she watched as a child that made her want the job.
Better yet, when they passed the seatbelt laws here the police said they would not use it to pull over motorists, but that was well over a decade ago.

It’s a good way to make money. And by law-abiding, you mean “people breaking the seat belt law”.
I got nailed for not completely stopping at a stop sign. Everyone in the car thought I stopped but I wasn’t sure. So I paid the fine. Now I make sure to stop. Make sure you wear your seat belt.

In court it will be claimed that the mere act of speeding is the threat. Judges everywhere eat it up. In fact speeding itself isn’t the problem but rather gradient between speeds. Frankly, the biggest safety problem in this mix is police conduct. They speed to catch the speeder going well above prevailing traffic flow. This in itself is a big problem. Then they often block traffic flow to give the ticket. Even if they don’t traffic has to accommodate them which slows everything WAY down. Speed laws should be guidelines not hard and fast limits. However, as we all know its not about safety, its about making $.
I can top everyone.. I was wearing my seat belt, them some a**hole State Trooper pulled me over saying I wasn’t. Cost me $60 for a violation I didn’t commit.

HA-HA. yes, evenually everyone becomes a criminal with these law. Ironically I usually spot unmarked police cars and radar traps and know where all the red light cameras are but in this case I was taking a short trip back home and got lazy. My fault.
It's a shakedown. It's all about money - Your money and my money being robbed at gunpoint by armed revenue collection agents under the color of law. A fine example of insurance companies and government working hand in hand to empty the wallets of the driving populace. "to extort and oppress"

Even that is a trap. 80 mph in the daytime, 65 mph at night. They write lots of tickets at night, including one for my wife.
Traffic Court is one place where the old saying Innocent until proven guilty does not count.
You are guilty of whatever the cop says you are guilty of. Your word doesnt mean squat.
I got ticketed on my motorcycle. After waiting through two lights I went through the stop light. The motorcycle did not trip the switch that changes the light. It happens. The cop could have cared less. I went to court and lost.

When I get an unfair ticket, especially if it is local, I won’t buy anything in that county or town again. I have traveled all over the country.
Never believe a cop! Call the local politican and tell him you are going to run against him next term.

i once saw one of those cute lil radar boxes on the side of the road, hopelessly destroyed...the number of black marks leading to the spot told me that a chain reaction occured when somebody noticed the box and locked em up, and hopefully the only injury/fatality was the taxpayer purchased robocop...
Thank you SCOTUS for that decision allowing DUI checkpoints and opening up this entire can of worms.
The same session by the way that decided that burning the American Flag was hunky-dory.
Part of me wants to drive up to a DUI checkpoint, get out of my car and set fire to a flag. Would tie up our entire Federal court system for the next 13 years while they figured out what to do with me.
Has your local paper started running stories about white criminals? Some 'crimes' so lame you wonder why it's being covered until you see the picture of the person with blond hair and blue eyes...
Liberal elites are on the defensive - they know people are waking up to black crime and they'll do what they can to keep liberal lies in force.( Liberal narrative: Blacks are eternal victims - whites are thugs )

Holy crap, I am glad you were not in the car with me when I got pulled over. You probably would have got yourself maced and handcuffed and my car impounded, hell it's a $25 fine with no points and she didnt ask me about anything else unrelated and half apologized for it.
I should have known it was a trap coming up on it, I was getting soft. Maryland is notorious for radar/laser speed traps unmarked patrol cars, even the marked ones are built stealthy looking (black with very low flat pull over lights) and yet I usually can pick those out and avoid speeding and other tickets .
