Vandals Destroy Bucks County Park Facilities, Causing $Thousands In Damage

NEWTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - Police in Newtown Township (Bucks County) are looking for the vandals responsible for wreaking havoc at a township park overnight.

Police believe the vandalism occurred at the tail end of the Memorial Day weekend, sometime late Monday into the early morning hours of today.

Newtown police chief Rick Pasqualini says the restrooms at Roberts Ridge Park, on Frost Lane, were so badly damaged they will likely need to be demolished and then reconstructed.

“They kicked the doors down, then they got on the roof and damaged solar panels and the ventilation system,” he told KYW Newsradio. “And they actually threw body blocks into the framing and destroyed the walls of the structure.”

Pasqualini says the playground equipment and the plumbing system at the park were not damaged. He says they have some “trace” evidence from the scene and believe a group of people was responsible.

And I thought all the Amish were in Lancaster County.

I’m from the area and it’s most likely spoiled rich brats who decided to go on a vandalism spree after getting drunk off their parent’s booze.

Not Amish and not “Amish”.

One: they’ll find the kids who did this very soon if they haven’t already done so. Two: The kids and their families will end up reimbursing every penny of the damage, and will do so also soon.

I sure hope they're caught and directed to reimburse the county, and provide some serious sweat equity. Being from the neighboring county, I agree that it was most likely perpetrated by spoiled rich kids. More typically they trash a private residence in the course of an unsupervised party, but this kind of behavior pops up from time to time.

Do you have some insight into the investigation?

I would assume that damaging solar panels warrants the death penalty.

Those animals...

One side note on this story is how expensive public accomodations have become. There used to be a time when public bathrooms were concrete and wood. Cheap and durable. This public bathroom had solar pannels. Why? Between the union labor and the upgrades that most townships add to public structures like this these days, I bet it costs a million to refurbish these bathrooms.

I agree with you that they should be caught and held accountable. I a wary of forcing them to reimburse the county though. That has turned into a real boondogle for counties. Public works and expensive labor to build them mean that this restroom probably had a bunch of over-priced extras and cost a fortune.

Counties and townships have tried to force people "at fault" in accidents or for fires to pay the cost of police or fire services too. Once again, I understand the desire to hold people to account but the government offloads a bunch of overpriced, union rate costs onto the citizens in doing so. The cost imposed is much, much higher than it should be.

I know what the local police do well, and also know the local Judge. I know the kind of folks we have here, also have some inference from experience in past similar cases. That is to say, I made an educated guess as to what will happen.

Just like a few years ago I made an educated guess that they won’t be able to solve a murder without some help. Murders are rare here.

Makes sense. Hope you're right. If it happened in our community I think we'd have a similar result, for the same reasons.

That can be a problem. Our public buildings certainly seem to be very expensive these days. We're building a new high school, and it's often referred to around here as the Taj Mahal. It was approved before the economy tanked at a price tag of ~$115 million. I doubt the taxpayers would have gone along with it had the vote come a year or two later.

Our local town closed the restrooms at the local park because of vandalism. Now, when something is going on, Porta-Potties are used. We do not have a racial problem in our area so we know the problem is local lilly whites, probably the children of the inbred locals who vandalized the park restrooms 50 years ago.

In this case, I doubt it's related to the other Memorial Day violence. If you knew the area you'd understand. It just isn't near the kinds of urban centers where you'd expect flash mobs, and it's hard to imagine a bunch of Philadelphia ne'er-do-wells deciding to pile into cars to vandalize a restroom in a Bucks County park. Too much work.
