When I first visited Gettysburg years ago, I was overwhelmed with the sense of sacrifice made to secure our union, but my most recent visit this morning was even more significant as subsequent visits allow reflection on the state of our union today. Striking to me is how ready and willing troops and civilians were in 1863 to lay their lives on the line. Are we as ready and willing to accept the call for sacrifice today in order to keep our union secure?
Hopefully the kids on school field trips whom we met this morning grasped the poignant irony at the site we toured together: that such a beautiful stretch of the Pennsylvania countryside should have been the site of the bloodiest battle in the Civil War. But perhaps its fitting that such a sacred place should be so beautiful now in order to commemorate the terrible sacrifices made to bring about, in the words of Lincolns famous address, "a new birth of freedom."
But this "new birth of freedom" wasnt fully realized by the generation that paid the price for it. Over 100 years after the battle, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and declared, "Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children." It took the struggle for Civil Rights to truly complete what Lincoln called "the unfinished work" for which the heroes of Gettysburg "gave the last full measure of devotion."
Today, when we speak of "fundamentally restoring all that is good in America," we remember the debt of gratitude we owe to those who sacrificed to create and preserve our union. From the Civil War to the struggle for Civil Rights, generations of Americans have made great sacrifices necessary to pass on to us this great gift of freedom. Its our duty to them to preserve it, cherish it, and pass it on to our children, so "that these dead shall not have died in vain and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
When duty calls, are we willing to answer today? Please remember that freedom isn't free - the price paid for our liberty has been great.
The reminders of the past costs are seen at Gettysburg. The way forward in protecting our unified body is encapsulated in Lincoln's 2nd inaugural address: "...with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds."

The sad and painful truth is that the liberal left is really trying to turn America’s past into a collection of “Bumper Sticker slogans”.
“Freedom of Speech?””Freedom of Religion?” “Government of, by and for the people?” Outmoded slogans all...just ask them.
Is it Sarah's "duty" to run in 2012, is she willing to answer today?
The ultimate, personal, gut-check question you need to ask yourself is this:
“What are you prepared to do about it??? And what are you prepared to sacrifice for that cause???”
It is rhetorical, personal, and something people back during this time didn’t have much of a choice to make...
But we do...If you do not think making sacrifices is your baliwick, then let that life of yours be a softer burden on you...
With the way things are going, I do not see much in the way of sacrifice, outside the armed services of this country, that amount to a hill of beans to thwart the ever increasing threat to our basic lives, liberty and pursuit of happiness...
Politicians, and other elected officials had better start realizing that American citizenry is a lot more than just handing out water bottles, filling sandbags, volunteering in emergency services...We expect, and should demand more from our elected officials to protect these noble sacrifices to ensure the continued freedoms others have made the ultimate sacrifice to secure...
I feel in these time that a serious lack of committment and sacrifice from these officials and the direction some liberal/progressive political factions are taking us is not being challenged and utterly destroyed for some reason...
I believe it is a political and personal lazyness of the citizenry that keeps the continuation of these abhorant policies festering in our government from DC to your local city hall...
If you are afraid of being ostrasized or laughed at for your passion, because they believe that there is not enough of us fired up about the direction this country is going??? Then maybe its time to light a fire under a few nieghbors and friends...
If you are hated by them for exposing their lazyness, and apathy, then of course that may be a sacrifice you may have to endure...
Or, hopefully, benefit from your efforts, not for you personally, but for this country...
I would summize that we have NOT seen enough from November of last year to say that anything has really changed...
Maybe a few more eyes are open, but certainly, not enough has been done (completed) to say we have changed anything...
I hope to be proven wrong, I hoped the election would garner some momentum to carry us into 2012...But at this point I see nothing to believe that we will suffice enough in that election to turn the ship out of this inevitable crash on the rocks that will destroy us all...
Secure the Union? Look what it got us , a Kenyn president . My great grandfather was wounded at Gettysburg as a member of a Pennsylvania Regiment . Too bad he fought for the WRONG side !

This son of the South is glad to see others realize that aside from ending the evil of slavery, the “War of Northern Agression” resulted in BAD things happening as well.

My great grandfather came here on a boat from Europe around 1900. I have imagined how I would react to that if my ancestor had been maimed or killed fighting for the Union.
My grandfather was a doughboy and my father served in the Navy during Korea.
