California authorities deny state's first medical parole case
A quadriplegic inmate serving a 150-year term for kidnapping, beating and raping a San Diego woman in 1998 will not be released to the care of family members under a new law, parole board rules.

Reporting from San Diego The reasoning seemed disarmingly simple: In a time of fiscal crisis and over-crowded prisons, why should California spend hundreds of millions of dollars retaining prisoners so sick, aged, paralyzed or otherwise infirm that they are no longer a threat to the public?
And so the Legislature passed a bill to permit medical paroles as both a humanitarian gesture and a way to save money for the state.

A knife attack in prison in 2001 severed Martinez's spinal cord, leaving him a quadriplegic. His medical expenses cost the state more than $600,000 a year. When he was in a medical facility outside the prison, the cost of round-the-clock guards exceeded $800,000 a year.
His family his father is a retired firefighter, his mother a former business executive is ready to take him home and provide care.

Ive got all day dipshit.
I'm...Not angry in the least.
lol..
Do you happen to understand one does not need to be on a jury to know what a suspect was charged with, convicted of, or what their sentence was?
The prisons are built, his keepers are there anyway, and those costs go on whether or not he's imprisoned......just the way people don't seem to fathom that our military costs are pretty much the same, no matter where the troops are stationed.
Keep him right where he is.
No kidding? Wow! Are you able to comprehend that the details of any case determine what a likely sentence for criminal activity is? Did you read ALL, or any of, the testimony?
At least everyone will now know you feel a person convicted of rape and kidnapping and beating and innocent person is getting a light sentence of 150 years. Here is a clue for you. The man was likely trying to MURDER the woman and the jury and judge heard that. But if you prefer to take the words of the LA Times at face value and believe the man simply "beat" her, then be my guest.
You're forgetting the astronomical costs to the tax payers for his health care while in prison. A rubber chicken would be more a threat in this particular case. This guys life is basically already over. Even if ya opened his cell door, he couldn't leave....
It’s expensive to keep a quad, no matter how you slice it. Barring that, it’s no secret that those who are forced to live in the prison hospital cost us an arm and a leg. He’s not capable of causing trouble, let his family have him and save the cash.
It might be a total surprise you, but trying to murder someone and actually murdering someone, are two very different things.
He got sent to prison where he was paralyzed for life. I’d say that he wound up with life. Let him go. He’s never going even going to have the freedom to wipe his own ass. There is no reason to keep this one behind bars.
Yup. He’ll qualify for all kinds of “po, po, pitiful me” assistance from the govt.
He already does, and then some due to being incarcerated.
His folks are professionals, and can share the cost.
That’s true, but they will still collect a pretty penny. Too bad the cockroach didn’t die from his wound.
Sparing some future 'hurt feelings' is not worth $600,000 a year to the taxpayers for housing a quadriplegic.
That $600K is for his individual health care alone. The regular prison stuff, which you talk about as money spent whether he's there or not, is an added $200K.
