SOME 300 drug traffickers are on death row in Iran, the judiciary has announced, reflecting Tehrans hard line on narcotics which has added to international concerns over its extensive use of capital punishment.
"For 300 drug-related convicts, including those who were in possession of at least 30 grammes of heroin, execution verdicts have been issued," Sharq daily quoted Tehran prosecutor-general Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi as saying yesterday.
Although the list was long it did not contain any big-time traffickers or ringleaders, he said.
All the convicts face death by hanging.
Amnesty International says Iran is second only to China for the number of executions, with at least 252 people put to death last year.
As well as drug trafficking, murder, adultery, rape, armed robbery and apostasy are all punishable by death under Sharia law practised since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Iran dismisses criticisms of its justice system, saying it is implementing Islamic law and accuses the West of double standards.
I would bet that the basij or whoever carry sets of 30g “throwdown bags” of heroin like some corrupt cops have “throwdown guns”.
“Abdul, look! This person has heroin here” as the cop puts the throwdown bag in the arrested’s hand. “And look here, a Bible as well”. Throwdown Bibles to arrest someone for apostasy? Would not put it past them.
Here’s to the day that the Revolutionary Guards and the Basij are decorating lampposts.
Real heroin dealers however I have no sympathy for.
Is it that way in Iran, too?
I realize you’re making some sort of joke, but hanging hundreds of protesters from cranes isn’t too funny - you’ll have to tell me where it’s happening besides Iran.
“If they are actual drug dealers then they can’t meet the hangman’s noose soon enough. Push poison and you die -should be how it is here too”
Sharia Dennis??
Should honor killings be the norm here too?
BLEH.
Note that the line I quoted did not mention the hangings. It referred to the accusations.
I think that the misuse of accusations is a problem, regardless of the punishment.
