Iran is taking steps toward an aggressive new form of censorship: a so-called national Internet that could, in effect, disconnect Iranian cyberspace from the rest of the world.

The leadership in Iran sees the project as a way to end the fight for control of the Internet, according to observers of Iranian policy inside and outside the country. Iran, already among the most sophisticated nations in online censoring, also promotes its national Internet as a cost-saving measure for consumers and as a way to uphold Islamic moral codes...

If I was part of the rebellion, I could come up with about a dozen ways to undermine their attempt...

And I am not even that uber-technical. The smart kids are also the ones who want to be free.

This will be an exercise in futility, and I wish the freedom fighters well.

I work with a guy from Iran. His mother is still there and in her 70’s. Every night after dark she has to sneak out to attach her dish to the roof and take it down before going to bed. Internet is spotty at best.. and the phones are monitored..

I’m sure the RIAA, MPAA and their enablers in Congress will be watching with interest for tips on how it’s done.

A logical step for a totalitarian state. I expect the same from China when things get a little more rocky over there.

No kidding, and don't forget, FR is probably at the top of the list of "dangerous" sites as far some liberals are concerned, since we talk about guns and freedom and stuff, and that's very dangerous!

Iran's national Internet will be "a genuinely halal network, aimed at Muslims on an ethical and moral level," Ali Aghamohammadi, Iran's head of economic affairs, said recently according to a state-run news service. Halal means compliant with Islamic law.

Halal - Just what it sounds like the Iranians are hungry for.

A yummy new concoction of 1984 with a zippy fundamentalist twist

A good example of why the nanny state progressives in the W.H. have been loath to criticize Iran (or support the protests for freedom in the country). They are jealous of the breath and capability of the State of Iran to be its citizen’s nanny. The W.H. is in awe.
