Al-Qaeda fighters have taken control of a provincial capital in Southern Yemen, heightening fears that the country's political crisis is playing into the hands of the terrorist group.

Residents of Zinjibar, a town on the southern coast that is home to some 18,000 people, said that 200 masked Islamist militants, some of them members of al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula, or AQAP, launched an attack that began on Friday afternoon.

The fighters were accused of pillaging the town, burning down buildings and launching violent reprisals that left corpses strewn across dusty streets....

Washington began eyeing the impoverished Yemen as a possible new haven for al Qaeda in recruiting as early as 2001. It was the homeland of UBL, whose followers bombed the destroyer USS Cole a year before the 9/11 attacks.

A Russian Expert in Islamic affairs of the Arab Gulf, Avigeni Nuvikuf, indicated the military establishment made by Former Soviet Union for the Yemeni Socialist Party are being used for trainees from Al-Qaeda's members where military experts in the Yemeni Socialist Party believe that the United States is the real enemy.

The Saudi Arabia Al-Qaeda branch has moved to Yemen to avoid arrest by Saudi security authorities.

Recently, it was reported that al Qaeda headquarters in Afghanistan had moved entirely into Yemen for safer quarters.

One might ask why the focus on the WOT is being reflected elsewhere in the world?
Obama's Libyan WOT campaign was high on the agenda when he met recently for 90 minutes with Russia's president, Dmitri Medvedev.

And if given the opportunity, they would leave bodies in the streets of every city and town in America.

and launching violent reprisals that left corpses strewn across dusty streets....

isn’t that why the USA and NATO are bombing government buildings and killing children in Libya, to prevent... ?

...not to mention, that attacks on Coptic Christians have gotten worse since Mubarak was forced out... yet G8 wants to reward the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt with billions...

Could Islam be orchestrated by the same demon that caused the Aztecs to commit human sacrifices?

I read that more than 95 percent of Egyptian women have had a clitorectamy.

What a miserable place. What a sadistic religion.

I’ve read that Yemen is one of the most heavily armed Countries in the world. If this is so than how did 200 fighters reek so much mayhem on a town of 18,000?

We have an Islamic Kenyan president. Fighting in North Africa for Islamic African interests should be expected.

Maybe Obama is supplying them with weapons and logistics?

It could be embarrassing at the next Ramadan dinner if he fails to help the Brotherhood.

18,000 people in the town and noone just shoots the 200 Al Qaeda guys? The folks in Korea town in LA did a far better job protecting themselves from much larger, and armed, rioting gangs during the Rodney King riots.

The Telegraph is relying on government sources for this story, which is a pack of lies.

What really happened in Zanjibar is that President Saleh sent in the 26 Brigade of his Republican Guards to capture a political opponent named Sheik Abdul Majid al-Zindani. The Brigade was quickly surrounded and had to fight their way out of town. Saleh sent in the 101 Brigade to rescue them, into the neighborhoods of Al-Aslah, Al-Sarh, Al-Tumisi and Sawahil in Zanjibar.

That is the cause of all the shelling and fighting. AQ rather than attacking civilians, would be welcomed in the entire province. FR posters have quickly recognized the bogus claims of this article. Al-Zindani is UBL's former mentor and a major AQ sympathizer.

We may speculate about AQ coming into influence in other areas of the "Arab Spring", but let there be no doubt that AQ will take over Yemen if Saleh is not thrown out and a stabel government formed, soon, very soon.

? sorry, i am confused. you seem to have good knowledge here.

you say the province would welcome Al-Quada.
and the government is fighting against them.

...and previously, Obama had praised Saleh, for helping us in the war against AQ...

yet you say AQ will take over Yemen if Saleh remains.
but AQ WON’T take over if he is removed ?!?!?

In Yemen, AQ is not some foreign presence like it is everywhere else in the world, including Saudi Arabia, adopted home of the bin Ladens.

The old school, hardcore, to-the-death, AQ are Yemenis.

Yemenis are the outcasts of the Arab world. They are, by far, the poorest and most isolated Arabs. They resent, fear, loath, everyone, particularly other Arabs like the Saudis that have enslaved and stolen and used them for millenia.

Saleh/the government is a dictator/ship and we are friends with him only because AQ threatens us both, lethally. No is nothing truer in the arabic world than the saying "My enemies enemy is my friend".

The reason Yemenis welcome AQ is because AQ hates the same people: everyone except Yemenis. AQ is blood kin there, brothers, cousins, not just related by some marriage of convenience, real relatives, not guests of the Pakhtuns, etc.

When Saleh is deposed/killed there will be an enormous political vacuum there. Saleh is fighting AQ to save his own hide, not to help America. AQ is now a major force in the rural areas and is rapidly organizing the tribes.

There are minority political groups that are available for leadership that are democratic to some degree. We could ally with them, arm and train them and have good results if we move quickly.

If Saleh remains, hatred of him drives the tribes towards AQ in the absence of a more benevolent force. That is the contradiction of which Yemen has a great many.
