There are some better possibilities for names, but they could have done worse too. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a new Enterprise, which I believe is scheduled to be decommissioned when the Ford is completed. Or perhaps some of the more historical names, such as Yorktown, Wasp, Saratoga, etc would have been fine options as well.

Some day the Navy will name a ship after Obama. Of course it will be the Chinese navy.

JFK ? NAw, Theyc ould have called it the USS Marilyn Monroe , since Jack had weighed her anchor.

Or maybe the USS Monica Lewinski, instead of the USS Clinton.

Either would be appropriate IMHO.Both women suffered horribly because of them.

Interesting. The Pentagon and congress underfunded the Navy from 1989 - present causing the first JFK CV 67 an early end. The only sense I can make out of this is that the first JFK's over all hull condition may not be fit for museum status???

They seem to name everything after politicians now. It must be like living in Stalin’s time.

I would like to see a new Yorktown even though I served on the first Big John.

The selection John F. Kennedy, designated CVN 79, honors the 35th President of the United States and pays tribute to his service in the Navy, in the government, and to the nation.

What? He lost the only ship he ever commanded and failed in his attempt to free Cuba from a Communist takeover. The USS Benedict Arnold would be less offensive. IMHO

Named after a WWII Naval Officer who, while in the immeasurable vastness of the South Pacific, managed to get his command run over by a Japanese destroyer.

PT 109 should have been called The Minnow.

Why should anyone have TWO aircraft carriers named after them?

Especially someone who managed to get his own boat sunk by not following orders?

We already had a USS Kennedy. No need for another one.

Alas, I think the CVN-78 class will all be named after former Presidents. Besides CVN-79 being named John F. Kennedy, I think the proposed CVN-80 could be named after Franklin D. Roosevelt (there was a USS Franklin D. Roosevelt but that was scrapped around 1978).

During World War II, Kennedy took command of PT 109 at Tulagi Island in the Solomons with a mission to intercept Japanese ships attempting to resupply their barges in New Georgia. In the early morning hours of Aug. 2, 1943, Kennedy’s ship was inadvertently struck by an enemy ship and split in half.

Prior to going to the Pacific theater he was
sleeping with a NAZI spy in Washington DC.

When we lived in Tulsa, I met the captain of one of the PT boats in Kennedy’s squadron. This was on government business and I talked to him for maybe half an hour.

Of course I asked him about Kennedy. He said all the other captains liked him. He was completely forthright tho that having your PT boat rammed by a destroyer was just about the worst embarrassment a PT boat commander could suffer. He did refuse to personally criticize Kennedy but I got the message.

He did say Kennedy performed well after his boat was sunk.

Put me on the list for carriers to bear the names of historic ships, instead of politicians of either party.

I would start with five available names of the original six frigates:
United States
President
Congress
Chesapeake
Constellation

And then I would go with other historic names like:
Bon Homme Richard
Enterprise
Essex
Independence
Lexington
Yorktown
Kearsarge

With the exception of George Washington, the other founders, and Abraham Lincoln, I would prohibit the naming of vessels after politicians, period.

I’d like to see a USS Apollo 11.

My former BIL served on the Hornet when they plucked Apollo capsule. He was an arsehole to my Sis, but he did get me an Independence Day cruise on her, which I’ll never forget.
