Speakers seek halt in deportations

VAN NUYS - Immigration activists, officeholders and Christian leaders rallied at a San Fernando Valley church on Saturday, renewing angry calls for President Barack Obama to order a halt of deportations they say shatter the families of legal U.S. residents.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Rep. Howard Berman, D-Van Nuys, and immigration-reform proponent Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., were among the speakers at La Iglesia en la Camino (The Church on the Way) in what was billed as a bipartisan town-hall meeting.

"When communities are terrorized by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids, when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel ... the system just isn't working, and we need to change it now," Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez then told the audience this was a passage from a 2008 Obama campaign speech, and charged Obama has failed to fulfill his promise to help.

Gutierrez, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus Immigration Task Force, said the administration's strategy of stepping up deportations to try to win over opponents of immigrant-rights expansions has failed.

About 400 people attended the event put on by the church and Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, fewer than organizers expected.

Robert Gittelson, a founder of the conservative group, said the small attendance reflected the "despair" felt by many Latinos about the prospects for immigrant-rights expansion in the current Congress. Conducted in English and Spanish, the event featured testimonials from three families that organizers said are being hurt by the deportations of otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants.

I knew Luis Gutierrez when the little POS was a member of the Latin Kings gang in Chicago. Still a little gangster.

We need to deport or imprison ALL illegal aliens, including their anchor babies, seal/secure the border with armed troops,a fence and a wall, and have a lethal response to those who try to invade our country.

otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants

OK, whoa. Stop right there.

If you're an illegal immigrant, you're a "not legal" person - i.e., you broke the law to get into the country.

So you're not law-abiding, right from the start. So any argument about "otherwise law-abiding" is irrelevant.

Would there be demands for leniency for "otherwise law-abiding" murderers or rapists? Of course not.

This type of BS logic by the alien-apologists must be challenged every time!

Right now..a year after their overseas marriage, we are still struggling to get our new daughter in law into the country legally. In the same period illegals have entered the country dropped babies, gotten welfare and food stamps and now are wanting amnesty and a quick green card.
Where’s the justice in that.
Our liberal friends no longer ask us about her status, because they know they will get a lecture on their support of illegals and their spawn. In fact..we don’t even want to talk to them anymore.

It's propaganda.

The agenda is more voters. They leapfrog over the inconvenient truth these people are in America in violation of law, call anyone who makes that factual point "racist," "bigot," etc., minimize the importance of an orderly legal immigration process, blur the lines by referring to them only as "immigrants," a half-truth, and make emotional appeals about broken families.

Propaganda is used because it works. When you control the language of the debate, the avenues of distribution, and you control the educational establishment you have total control in shaping and reshaping opinion. The last element is key because it allows you to rob whole generations of critical thinking skills.
